Thomas Menzies Builders Ltd of Kirkcaldy, Fife, in Scotland has opted for its first Volvo EC220E excavator thanks to the high level of operator comfort, smoothness of control and overall stability and performance, according to Plant & Environmental Manager, Brian Henderson

Purchasing its first general purpose excavator from Volvo is a new departure for Thomas Menzies Builders Ltd, having traditionally been associated with alternative brands,  although the company does operate Volvo compact equipment. “We’ve had a long association with Volvo’s utility dealer, Rockbreakers UK Ltd, which has supplied hydraulic hammers and other ancillary attachments to us for some time. When we learned that they had taken on the franchise for Volvo utility equipment, knowing their track record for excellent support, we had added confidence deciding to purchase a new 5.5 tonne excavator for our fleet last April,” explains Brian Henderson.

Plant Manager Brian Henderson impressed with the high level of operator comfort, the smoothness of control, quietness and overall performance and stability of the machine.

“It was this relationship that introduced us to the larger offering from Volvo, and, following a visit to Volvo’s ‘Live It Dig It’ event at Alloa earlier this year and having the chance to really test the EC220E, the decision to add this model to our fleet was made,” he says. “I was certainly impressed with the high level of operator comfort, the smoothness of control, quietness and overall performance and stability of the machine. Not only that, I’ve been equally impressed with the professional approach from Volvo’s Area Business Manager, Derek Kidd, and demonstrator, Ian Kennedy, in the purchasing and handover process – it bodes well for our future relationship with Volvo.”

Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo engine developing 174 nett hp the EC220E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. Operator comfort is another major plus point, with the Volvo Care Cab providing plenty of legroom and foot space. Excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a fourteen-vent, climate control system. An adjustable, easy-to-read LCD colour monitor provides real-time information of the machine functions.

The EC220E has been supplied with a Volvo Blue service agreement which is based on a fixed-rate-per-scheduled service and a fixed rate for mileage, including oil sampling and regular inspections to be reviewed on an annual basis. The new recruit will be deployed on a variety of applications ranging from general groundworks, muck shifting and lifting duties, thanks to the addition of an optional Prolec RCI Pro system.

Thomas Menzies (Builders) Ltd, established in 1937 and based in Kirkcaldy, Fife, act as main contractor and principal contractor on civil engineering contracts ranging from £10,000 – £2m for both the public and private sector as well as sub-contracting works.
