Tarmac kicks off National Apprenticeship Week with 2018 apprenticeship campaign

At the start of National Apprenticeship Week, Tarmac is set to offer 100 new apprenticeships as part of its 2018 programme. The pledge is part of a major corporate commitment to helping UK construction develop a talented, diverse and highly-skilled workforce.

The company will recruit apprentices from across the UK and is offering roles ranging from HR commercial and general management through to mechanical and electrical apprenticeships.

Martin Riley, Senior Vice President for Tarmac – the UK’s leading construction solutions business – started his career as an apprentice over 30 years ago, and understands their importance to the industry. Martin said: “As a proud former apprentice, I’m passionate about giving young people the opportunity to train, build careers, and develop within this business. Our apprentices have personalised training and clear development that’s tailored to their strengths and ambitions. My aim is to make Tarmac the first company that apprentices think of when considering a career, and we want to work with them to train the future leaders of this industry.”

Tarmac has a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities, each lasting between one and four years on average, including expert on-site technical training. Successful candidates can expect competitive salaries and the opportunity for career progression as part of a global business.

Liam Owen, who joined the business as a Management Apprentice in 2014, won the Highways Awards Apprentice of the Year award in 2016: “Tarmac’s apprenticeship scheme has given me so many great opportunities and experiences, and I’ve been supported to learn and develop by everyone around me. I’ve been with the business four years now and have been given real responsibility which is very rewarding. The combination of unique experiences, career development support and a great bonus package has been fantastic, and I’d encourage anyone thinking of applying for a job here to go for it.”

Tarmac’s ambitions for its 2018 apprenticeship programme have been backed by Government. The Rt Hon Anne Milton MP, minister for apprenticeships and skills said: “National Apprenticeship Week is a great opportunity for employers and apprentices to tell their stories about how an apprenticeship worked for them. Whatever your age or background an apprenticeship offers a huge range of choices so you can get the job that you want to enable you to get on in life.”

This latest intake of apprenticeships is another step forward for Tarmac in fulfilling its commitment to the 5% Club, a movement of employers providing ‘earn and learn’ opportunities to develop the skills and talents people need to become more employable and create meaningful careers.

National Apprenticeship Week runs from 5 to 9 of March and will see employers and apprentices from across the UK come together to celebrate the success of apprenticeships and encourage even more people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career.
