Balfour Beatty will ‘Open Doors’ to projects and potential career opportunities

This week, Balfour Beatty welcomes members of the public to its construction sites across the UK to support Build UK’s Open Doors event.

This popular, annual event welcomes members of the public from all age ranges and professions including students, those seeking guidance on alternative career paths and those who are interested in the built environment, to visit a construction site in order to learn more about the vast career opportunities on offer in the construction industry.

Balfour Beatty’s infrastructure experts, ranging from its design and build trainees to Project Directors, will welcome up to 450 members of the public to 12 of its sites across the UK. Visitors will experience a site tour and have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the industry.

Last week Balfour Beatty’s Peter Pan Moat Brae project hosted the national launch of Open Doors in Scotland, welcoming Oliver Mundell, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Dumfriesshire, for an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the restoration contract.

Other sites participating in Open Doors include the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme, the new Forth Valley College construction site in Scotland, the Almondbank Flood Protection Scheme in Perth, which was procured through Scape’s National Civil Engineering and Infrastructure framework, the One Palace Street residential redevelopment project in London and the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD).

Dean Banks, Chief Executive Officer, Balfour Beatty’s UK Construction Services business said: “The Open Doors event provides a unique opportunity to inspire more people into the construction industry and showcase the extensive career opportunities available. This is vital at a time when the demand for economic infrastructure is rising and there is a pressing need to tap into all available expertise and skills if we’re to deliver the pipeline of exciting projects in the sector.”

Sarah Beale, Chief Executive of CITB, said: “Construction will see huge growth in career opportunities over the next few years. Providing the public with a proper look at our industry gives us a much better chance of attracting the next generation of construction workers.

“We are delighted to be working with Build UK to deliver Open Doors and encourage people from all backgrounds to book onto a site visit and take the first step on the road to a successful career in construction.”

Balfour Beatty is committed to promoting the wide range of opportunities available within the construction industry and to bridging the skills gap that the industry currently faces. The Company is a member of The 5% Club, a UK employer-led initiative focused on creating momentum behind the recruitment of apprentices and graduates into the workforce.
