Australia’s most prolific rail company John Holland is set to commence early works for Stage 3 of the Gold Coast’s largest ever infrastructure project, Gold Coast Light Rail.

John Holland CEO Joe Barr said the start of construction would revitalise the city and create jobs at a much-needed time.

“We are excited to start early works on this city-shaping light rail project to improve public transport on the Gold Coast,” Mr Barr said.

The full Gold Coast Light Rail project is a 6.7km line extension from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads, and will create up to 760 jobs across the life of the project.

The project will connect communities and help reduce congestion on the Gold Coast road network, revitalising streetscapes and offering new options for active transport with upgraded pedestrian and cycle facilities.

Executive General Manager – Infrastructure, Andrew English said the project would have significant flow-on benefits to the local community.

“We know infrastructure drives the creation of both direct and indirect jobs – and this could not be more important right now for the Australian economy,” Mr English said.

“We are committed to supporting local businesses and the wider community throughout construction. We will work with businesses in the project area to minimise construction impacts where possible, and implement initiatives encouraging the community and our workforce to shop locally.”

Executive General Manager- Rail, Steve Butcher said the project team would draw on John Holland’s significant experience delivering high quality networks such as the Canberra Metro light rail system and Australia’s first automated railway, Sydney Metro.

“We are committed to working with all parties involved to improve the connectivity of transport on the Gold Coast, and continuing our legacy of delivering light rail systems that serve the people who jump on board each day,” Mr Butcher said.
