NEBOSH launches Diploma Scholarship for Health and Safety Professionals
Applications are open for the annual Michael Adamson NEBOSH Diploma Scholarship. This programme for the health and safety industry is designed to help aspiring professionals develop the skills they need to succeed in the workplace, advance their careers and, most importantly, keep people safe from harm.
The Scholarship is named in memory of Michael Adamson who lost his life in a preventable workplace incident. His sister Louise is a member of the judging panel and says: “On 4 August 2005 my wee brother Michael Adamson left for work and didn’t make it home; he suffered a fatal electrocution at the ‘all hands on deck’ job he’d been called to.
“Coming to terms with the death of a loved one who had his whole life ahead of him continues to be difficult enough, but even more so knowing that his death could so easily have been prevented. Michael’s story would not need to be told if safe systems of work had been put into practice, or if risk assessments hadn’t subsequently been described by the Health and Safety Executive as being ‘wholly inadequate’.
“By using their skills, knowledge, experience and NEBOSH qualifications, it is my hope that our scholarship recipients will inspire leadership teams, engage the workforce, and ensure everyone knows that safety is not an add-on to their job, it is their job.”
Three National (UK) and seven International learners will be awarded paid-for online study for the NEBOSH Level 6 National or International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals.
Applications are open from 16 May – 6 June 2023 and must be submitted through a form on NEBOSH’s website. Those who meet the minimum criteria will be reviewed by a panel of health and safety experts who will select the recipients. Judges include:
- Dee Arp, NEBOSH Chief Operating Officer
- Matt Powell-Howard, NEBOSH Head of Product Development
- Louise Adamson, Michael’s sister and NEBOSH Ambassador
- David Ongesa, NEBOSH Diploma holder and Regional Head of HSE at Kansai Plascon East Africa
