In the heart of Spain’s bustling capital, a significant leap towards sustainable urban mobility is taking shape.

Madrid, a city pulsating with life and relentless movement, has embarked on an ambitious journey to revolutionize its public transport system. The catalyst of this change? The introduction of the city’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, equipped with cutting-edge traffic light priority technology, courtesy of Kapsch TrafficCom’s Spanish subsidiary.

The Birth of Madrid’s BRT: A Commuting Game-Changer

Madrid’s first BRT, an innovative transit solution, now seamlessly connects two vital neighbourhoods – Valdebebas, a rapidly growing area, and the esteemed Hospital Ramon y Cajal in the north.

This 31-kilometer route, featuring an impressive 19 kilometres of exclusive lanes, is more than just a transport link; it’s a lifeline, slashing travel times from a cumbersome 50 minutes to an astonishing sub-30 minute journey.

Green Light for Progress: The Traffic Light Priority System

The core of this transformation lies in a sophisticated traffic light system, a technological marvel that ensures buses receive green lights automatically. This ingenious mechanism is powered by on-board beacons that interact with loops embedded in the pavement, sending signals to the traffic lights to facilitate smooth, uninterrupted bus travel. The upshot? Faster, more reliable routes with fewer stops.

Kapsch TrafficCom’s contribution is pivotal here. The company has equipped the BRT with 62 state-of-the-art traffic light controllers from its EcoTrafix platform, alongside ten CCTV cameras and a robust communications network to ensure seamless operation.

The Infrastructure Backbone: Fiber Optics and CCTV

The project’s technical backbone is equally impressive. Over 12 kilometres of fibre optics have been laid, forming a digital artery that transmits data and images from the cameras to the Mobility Management Centre.

This nerve centre is the brain of the operation, ensuring the system’s smooth and efficient functioning.

Kapsch TrafficCom: A Partner in Madrid’s Mobility Vision

Kapsch’s involvement in Madrid’s mobility landscape extends beyond the BRT. The company’s collaboration with the Madrid City Council encompasses various initiatives aimed at reducing congestion, pollution, and public health risks, while enhancing the overall road user experience.

Javier Aguirre, CEO of Kapsch’s Spanish organization, emphasizes the need for sustainable mobility models in response to suburban population growth.

“Our collaboration with the Madrid City Council underscores this priority, leveraging our expertise and technology in shaping new urban mobility paradigms,” he notes.

A Global Vision for Sustainable Mobility

Kapsch TrafficCom, a global leader in transportation solutions, is no stranger to such large-scale projects. With a successful track record in over 50 countries, the company is a beacon of innovation in tolling, traffic management, and demand management. Their mission? The Journey Ahead: A Model for Global Cities

Madrid’s BRT and traffic light priority system serve as a beacon for cities worldwide grappling with similar urban mobility challenges. The project not only symbolizes a significant stride towards sustainable commuting but also sets a benchmark in leveraging technology for public good.

As the city navigates this path of transformative change, the eyes of the world are on Madrid, watching a model of urban mobility unfold that could very well shape the future of city living globally.
