In a significant move towards enhancing urban mobility, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a $200 million loan aimed at expanding metro rail corridors and improving transport connectivity in Nagpur, India.

This ambitious initiative, dubbed the Nagpur Metro Urban Mobility Project, is set to revolutionize public transport within the city and its rapidly growing urban areas.

Enhancing Connectivity and Safety

The primary objective of the Nagpur Metro Urban Mobility Project is to provide efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly public transport. By easing the commute for residents, the project aims to boost productivity and improve the quality of life in Nagpur.

ADB Principal Transport Specialist Sharad Saxena highlighted the broader impact, saying: “ADB’s support will extend Nagpur’s metro rail network to meet rising travel demand and enhance the economy. This project will make the city more liveable—improving the urban environment and mobility of residents and enhancing their access to basic services.”

Detailed Plans for Metro Expansion

The project includes the extension of four key metro rail corridors:

  • Automotive Square to Kanhan
  • Prajapati Nagar to Transport Nagar
  • Khapri to Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) ESR
  • Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna

These extensions will add 43.8 kilometers of elevated metro rail corridors, featuring 32 new stations. These stations will be equipped with modern safety and security technologies and designed to cater to the needs of women, students, and people with disabilities.

Integrating Multiple Modes of Transport

Beyond merely extending the metro network, ADB’s support will also enhance the integration of the metro with other modes of transport in Nagpur. The project will improve connections between metro stations and city transport services, such as buses, e-rickshaws, e-scooters, and bicycles.

This integration aims to promote non-motorized transportation and ensure last-mile connectivity, making it easier for commuters to travel to and from the outskirts of Nagpur.

Supporting Comprehensive Urban Development

The ADB’s involvement goes beyond infrastructure development. It will assist the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) in developing a comprehensive five-year institutional action plan.

This plan includes a gender equality and social inclusion-responsive workplace strategy, which will promote a more inclusive working environment. Additionally, the project aims to enhance Maha Metro’s digital project management platform and provide staff training on metro planning and management.

Empowering Communities and Promoting Inclusivity

A notable aspect of the Nagpur Metro Urban Mobility Project is its focus on community empowerment and inclusivity. The project will create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women and disadvantaged groups through skills training, internships, and apprenticeships.

This initiative is expected to foster greater economic participation from these groups, contributing to more balanced and equitable urban development.

Long-term Benefits for Nagpur

The expansion of Nagpur’s metro rail system is not just about meeting the immediate travel demands. It represents a forward-looking approach to urban development, aiming to create a more connected, efficient, and inclusive city.

By improving transport connectivity, reducing travel time, and promoting sustainable travel options, the project will help Nagpur accommodate its growing population and economic activities.

A Step Towards Sustainable Urban Mobility

The ADB’s $200 million loan is a testament to the importance of sustainable urban mobility in today’s rapidly urbanizing world. As cities expand and evolve, the need for efficient, safe, and inclusive transport systems becomes ever more critical.

The Nagpur Metro Urban Mobility Project is a shining example of how international collaboration and strategic investment can drive significant improvements in urban infrastructure.

A Model for Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Transport

Nagpur’s journey towards enhanced urban mobility is set to gain significant momentum with the support of the ADB. The comprehensive approach of the Nagpur Metro Urban Mobility Project, from infrastructure development to community empowerment, highlights the multifaceted benefits of such initiatives.

As Nagpur gears up for this transformative project, the city is poised to become a model for sustainable and inclusive urban transport in India and beyond.
