SRL sets the Bar with UltraLight and REMOS Traffic Signal Management
When it comes to advancing traffic management, SRL Traffic Systems is not just keeping up with the times — they’re blazing a trail.
With a recent dual product launch, SRL has firmly positioned itself at the forefront of innovation in the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) market. The introduction of UltraLight, one of the first portable traffic signals compliant with the new TOPAS 2540A standard, along with the launch of the scalable REMOS remote traffic signal solution, showcases SRL’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and efficiency.
UltraLight – Compliant, Sustainable, and Built to Last
SRL’s UltraLight signal is the first of its kind to meet the stringent TOPAS 2540A compliance, a standard that has been gaining traction since its launch in mid-2023. This compliance assures customers that UltraLight is safe, efficient, and effective — making procurement decisions easier and more diligent for stakeholders involved in critical infrastructure projects.
UltraLight also brings some impressive practical features to the table. With a competitive battery run time and a bullet lock mechanism that minimises the need for frequent battery swaps, UltraLight helps reduce both maintenance time and energy consumption. This not only saves costs but also means road workers spend less time operating in potentially hazardous highway conditions.
UltraLight also integrates seamlessly with SRL’s Solar PLUS technology, giving users the chance to reduce their carbon footprint by harnessing renewable solar energy. The emphasis on sustainability doesn’t stop there; the product is designed to be highly resilient, boasting an IP57 rating to guard against water ingress and withstand tough weather conditions.
For connectivity, SRL has equipped UltraLight with the innovative radio acoustic wave stabiliser, ensuring consistent signal transmission and reliable telematic monitoring. The new optimal-size antenna ground plate further promotes uninterrupted communication — an essential feature for efficient traffic management.
The importance of TOPAS compliance goes beyond UltraLight itself. Moving forward, SRL plans to make all their portable traffic signals compliant with TOPAS 2540A, setting a new industry standard for safety and reliability. Coupled with their variable message signs (VMS) that meet the 2516D TOPAS requirements, SRL is pushing the boundaries of what traffic control technology can achieve.
REMOS – Redefining Remote Traffic Management
While UltraLight stands out for its portability and compliance, REMOS offers an entirely new dimension in scalable traffic management. REMOS is designed with one key aim: allowing traffic management teams to monitor and control multiple sites remotely, thereby reducing the number of personnel who need to be physically stationed at live roadwork locations.
The advantages of this remote management capability are immediately evident. Not only does REMOS enhance worker safety by minimising on-site exposure, but it also optimises labour costs. One operative can now manage several different sites, ensuring fluid traffic flow while reducing the risk of congestion or bottlenecks.
Another innovative feature is the inclusion of bandwidth compression technology, which makes REMOS the most resilient and cost-effective solution available by significantly cutting video image streaming costs. With built-in CCTV cameras integrated into REMOS signal heads, remote operatives get a crystal-clear line of sight, ensuring that every approach to a traffic signal is properly monitored and managed.
The environmental benefits of REMOS cannot be understated. SRL estimates that its deployment could reduce carbon emissions by 3,564 kg of CO2 per operative per year — all thanks to the reduced need for personnel to be physically present on site. This is a step towards greener, more sustainable traffic management solutions, contributing meaningfully to lowering the carbon footprint of construction and traffic management sectors.
An All-in-One Solution
REMOS comes as an integrated package that includes temporary traffic signal boxes, REMOS signal heads with embedded CCTV cameras, a remote traffic management control box (RTMC), and an SRL Control Hub subscription. The Control Hub acts as the central nervous system of the REMOS solution, giving operators a real-time overview of all managed sites.
Trials of REMOS have already been completed successfully, and full-scale pilots are set to take place early next year. The early results indicate that this remote signal management solution could represent a major leap forward in how roadworks and traffic are managed across the UK and beyond.
Mark Eburne, SRL’s Chief Executive Officer, has expressed his excitement over the company’s direction: “SRL is laser-focused on the development of innovative, sustainable ITS solutions that promote safety and efficiency on our road networks. We are very proud to launch two such pioneering products to the traffic management sector, and to be one of the first manufacturers to achieve the new TOPAS 2540A compliance.”
Meeting Industry Needs with Cutting-Edge Solutions
SRL Traffic Systems has positioned itself as a leader in the ITS space by combining technology and sustainability in one fell swoop. The UltraLight and REMOS solutions serve different but complementary purposes, providing the industry with tools that not only meet compliance standards but also aim to enhance safety, minimise environmental impacts, and improve operational efficiencies.
For those managing construction, utilities, and roadwork projects, these new products represent a significant advancement. With a long-standing reputation as one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of portable ITS equipment, SRL’s product portfolio includes everything from CCTV and work-zone protection barriers to ANPR systems, pedestrian signals, and VMS.
Setting a New Standard
The launch of UltraLight and REMOS isn’t just about introducing new products; it’s about establishing new standards in the industry. By being among the first to achieve TOPAS 2540A compliance, SRL is clearly demonstrating its commitment to raising the bar for safety, sustainability, and efficiency in traffic management.
As SRL looks to expand its offerings, the company is focusing on obtaining additional certifications across its product categories. This commitment to ongoing development is crucial in an industry that constantly evolves, driven by technological advancements and the need for greener, safer solutions.
The journey doesn’t end here for SRL. With a sharp focus on innovation, the company’s products are expected to play an increasingly significant role in how traffic management and construction sectors tackle challenges in a world demanding more efficiency and sustainability. Their approach reflects a clear understanding that the future of transport is one where technology and sustainability must go hand in hand.
Moving Forward with SRL’s Vision
The traffic management landscape is undergoing rapid change, and SRL’s recent product launches exemplify how the company is navigating these shifts. UltraLight and REMOS not only address the operational needs of today but also lay the groundwork for a more connected, automated, and environmentally friendly future. From solar-powered portable signals to advanced remote traffic management, SRL is proving that innovation is the key to driving progress on our roads.
Whether it’s about compliance, cost-efficiency, or sustainability, SRL Traffic Systems is leading by example, providing solutions that aim to make a meaningful impact. Their innovative, safety-first approach is not just revolutionising traffic management; it is setting a standard that others will surely follow.
