Volvo Electric Trucks driving a Green Revolution on Singapore’s Roads

When innovation meets sustainability, the road ahead looks not only greener but also smarter. Recently, a pivotal moment for Singapore’s logistics sector unfolded with the acquisition of two brand-new Volvo electric trucks by DSV Air & Sea.

This significant move marks the dawn of a new era in transportation, paving the way for an eco-friendly future. In a bustling city like Singapore, where efficiency meets innovation, this shift couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Future of Sustainable Logistics

DSV Air & Sea, a global leader in logistics, made headlines with the addition of two cutting-edge Volvo electric trucks—the Volvo FL Electric and Volvo FM Electric. These trucks were officially handed over during a special ceremony, symbolising more than just a purchase. It’s a powerful statement of intent from DSV: sustainability isn’t merely an option; it’s the road they’re taking.

These electric trucks represent the forefront of technology and green innovation. Volvo has firmly positioned itself as a market leader in electromobility, with over 4,200 electric trucks operating across 46 countries. For DSV, this acquisition isn’t just a leap forward; it’s a significant stride in aligning with their global sustainability objectives, which include reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

Gino Marzola, Managing Director of DSV Air & Sea Singapore & Malaysia, sums it up perfectly: “Launching our new electric fleet marks a pivotal moment for DSV in Singapore. It’s not just about adopting new technology; it’s about leading the way toward a greener, more sustainable future. We are thrilled by the positive feedback from clients and are confident that this initiative will bring us closer to achieving our long-term sustainability goals.”

Innovation in Transportation

Volvo Trucks, renowned for their pioneering efforts in electromobility, delivers vehicles that blend advanced technology with a practical approach to logistics. The two models purchased by DSV showcase this perfectly.

  • Volvo FL Electric: This model is specifically designed for urban distribution. It’s nimble, compact, and perfect for Singapore’s densely packed streets. With a tight turning radius and efficient electric drivetrain, the FL Electric is tailored for last-mile deliveries, making city logistics not just cleaner but quieter too.
  • Volvo FM Electric: The FM Electric, on the other hand, is built for heavier loads and longer hauls. It offers a greater payload capacity and advanced technology, making it suitable for larger-scale operations. Despite its size, this truck ensures the same high-performance, zero-emission operation, ideal for intercity journeys.

Both models are equipped with Volvo’s signature all-electric drivetrains, enabling not only quieter operations but also reduced noise pollution, an important factor in urban environments. They come with bespoke modifications, tailored specifically for DSV’s operations in Singapore, enhancing cargo capacity and overall efficiency.

But it doesn’t stop there. Volvo’s electric trucks are primed to expand even further. Set for a 2025 release, Volvo’s upcoming FH Electric truck boasts a game-changing 600 km range on a single charge, powered by the innovative e-axle technology. This new model will push the limits, enabling electric trucks to handle long-haul routes without the constant need for recharging.

A Sustainable Partnership

Volvo and DSV are not just partnering to make transportation greener—they’re working together to set the stage for a more sustainable future. This collaboration aligns with Singapore’s ambitious Green Plan 2030, which aims to transform the city-state into a hub of sustainable development.

Anna Engblom, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks, Southeast Asia & Japan, touches on the importance of these kinds of partnerships: “Long-lasting partnerships and a dedicated determination to truly make an impact are crucial for achieving substantial CO2 reductions in practice. We’ve experienced significant shifts towards a sustainable future across most of our markets. Our role as manufacturers is to ensure we’re prepared for these changes and continue to offer high-quality products that drive profitability for our customers.”

This strategic alignment between Volvo’s innovation and DSV’s sustainability goals creates a synergy that could potentially lead to significant breakthroughs in green logistics—not just in Singapore but across the globe.

Ensuring a Seamless Transition

New technology often requires a robust support system to ensure it’s implemented smoothly. Recognising this, DSV and Volvo are committed to ensuring the longevity and performance of these electric trucks.

A 7-year Gold Service Agreement has been put in place, covering all servicing and repairs, ensuring that DSV’s new fleet remains in optimal condition. On top of that, UD Trucks Singapore, which facilitated the handover, provided comprehensive driver training, ensuring that the teams at DSV are well-equipped to manage their new electric vehicles.

Joseph Heng, General Manager of UD Trucks Singapore, emphasised their role in this transition: “We are excited to be part of this green transition alongside DSV and Volvo Trucks. Providing comprehensive training and after-sales support to ensure these electric trucks deliver on their promise is at the heart of our commitment to helping Singapore achieve its sustainability goals.”

The Game Changer for Singapore

For Singapore, these trucks represent more than just vehicles—they symbolise a future where sustainable transport is no longer a vision but a reality. With DSV already operating electric vans and smaller trucks, this latest addition proves that the company is ready to scale up as the demand for green logistics solutions increases.

While DSV is already receiving positive feedback from clients, the company knows that widespread adoption of electric vehicles will depend on how well they can integrate into various supply chains. It’s a challenge, no doubt, but one DSV is ready to tackle, armed with a fleet of electric vehicles and a vision for a cleaner future.

Paving the Way for the Future

This electric fleet’s launch in Singapore represents a significant step in the right direction for both DSV and Volvo. As the world inches closer to global sustainability goals, the role of electric vehicles in logistics is bound to grow exponentially. DSV’s move serves as a reminder that the future of transport is not just electric—it’s here, and it’s ready to lead the charge.

The road ahead is clear: for companies that prioritise sustainability, the opportunities are endless. DSV’s commitment, paired with Volvo’s technological prowess, sets a powerful example for other logistics companies to follow. The future of transportation has never looked brighter—or greener.
