Abu Dhabi’s Autonomous Venture with SteerAI driving Future Industrial Vehicles

In a bold move that sets a new standard in autonomous technology, Abu Dhabi has unveiled SteerAI, a cutting-edge venture transforming industrial vehicles into autonomous powerhouses.

Launched under the aegis of the Advanced Technology Research Council’s (ATRC) commercialisation arm, VentureOne, SteerAI aims to revolutionise logistics and defence operations, making them safer, more efficient, and adaptable to complex environments. This ground-breaking venture, the second of its kind under VentureOne, underscores the UAE’s ambitions to position itself as a global leader in autonomous mobility.

The Powerhouse Behind Industrial Autonomy

SteerAI’s core strength lies in its modular autonomy system—a combination of a powerful software stack, a versatile hardware kit, and an integrated fleet management platform. This system empowers conventional industrial vehicles to navigate autonomously, precisely execute complex missions, and handle challenging environments.

At the heart of this venture is the ATRC’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII), which has meticulously developed this technology with the potential to transform both land and sea operations.

Advanced Features for Precision and Safety

Equipped with state-of-the-art navigation algorithms and sensors, SteerAI’s system enables industrial vehicles to operate autonomously across various terrains. These vehicles can autonomously steer around obstacles, assess potential hazards, and continue operations in environments where GPS and detailed mapping are scarce.

For logistics and defence sectors, where safety and precision are paramount, the system’s ability to function independently not only saves time but also mitigates risks, reducing the need for human intervention in potentially dangerous situations. Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, explained: “We have not simply created an autonomous vehicle—we have created an autonomous vehicle’s ‘brain.’” Dr. Aaraj highlighted that SteerAI’s modular system can be integrated across a range of vehicles, showcasing its adaptability and robust engineering.

UAE’s Vision of Autonomous Innovation

SteerAI’s launch underscores the UAE’s commitment to becoming a frontrunner in autonomous solutions. H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, Adviser to the UAE President and Secretary General of ATRC, stated: “The launch of SteerAI is a significant milestone in solidifying the UAE’s leadership in autonomous technology. At ATRC, our vision is to continuously push the boundaries of innovation, and SteerAI exemplifies how we are turning groundbreaking research into real-world solutions that drive tangible impact.”

With an aim to diversify the nation’s economic and technological assets, SteerAI represents a powerful tool for enhancing operational efficiency across sectors. The venture also aligns with the UAE’s broader strategic initiatives to incorporate AI-driven solutions into critical infrastructure.

The SteerAI System

SteerAI’s comprehensive solution integrates three critical components:

  1. Software Stack: Advanced algorithms provide autonomous navigation capabilities that adapt in real time to environmental conditions and unforeseen obstacles.
  1. Hardware Kit: The modular design ensures compatibility with diverse vehicle types, from heavy-duty ground vehicles to potentially autonomous maritime vessels.
  1. Fleet Management System: Enables remote mission planning, monitoring, and analytics, offering critical insights into fleet performance and resource optimisation.

Reda Nidhakou, the Acting CEO of VentureOne, highlighted the system’s value, stating: “SteerAI launch represents a major milestone in our journey of driving positive impact through the use of advanced technologies. Our vehicle-agnostic autonomous system redefines operational efficiency and precision while protecting companies’ most valuable assets—their people.”

Enhancing Efficiency in Logistics and Defence

In sectors like logistics, where operational costs are high and demand for precision is intense, autonomous technology like SteerAI offers significant benefits. From streamlining delivery processes to safeguarding personnel in potentially hazardous zones, SteerAI brings much-needed efficiency and safety. The defence sector, known for its challenging and risky environments, stands to benefit from SteerAI’s high-responsiveness and real-time analytics.

SteerAI’s remote fleet management system equips operators with tools for seamless mission planning and performance monitoring. This data-driven approach allows companies to make informed decisions, optimising their resource allocation and overall fleet performance.

Beyond Ground to Sea Operations

While SteerAI initially focuses on ground vehicles, plans are already underway to expand its capabilities to maritime applications. With a vision to enable seamless movement across land and sea, the venture aims to offer a fleet that can handle diverse environments without human input. As SteerAI’s technology advances, the potential for autonomous ships, cargo vessels, and patrol crafts to navigate independently across international waters could redefine global logistics and defence strategies.

This step aligns with the ATRC’s goal to leverage AI and autonomous technologies beyond traditional domains. With AI71, VentureOne’s first venture that utilises TII’s generative AI models for business applications, the ATRC demonstrates its commitment to a multi-faceted approach in tech innovation.

UAE’s Autonomous Vision for Tomorrow

The UAE’s focus on autonomous solutions, demonstrated through ventures like SteerAI and AI71, highlights the nation’s ambition to pioneer in high-tech fields. By investing in technologies that are flexible, scalable, and designed to enhance operational efficiency, the UAE is setting a new benchmark for tech-led growth. VentureOne’s role as the driving force behind these initiatives showcases the UAE’s commitment to sustainable innovation and a diversified economy.

The world is watching as the UAE paves the way for autonomous technology, reshaping logistics, defence, and a multitude of industries. With SteerAI’s robust system, this vision of self-sufficient, intelligent fleets may well define the future of industrial mobility.

Transforming the Way We Move

The launch of SteerAI marks a pivotal point in autonomous mobility. It’s not merely about automating vehicles; it’s about rethinking the very concept of movement across industries and sectors. As SteerAI expands, the UAE’s influence on global technology will only grow, inspiring other nations and organisations to reimagine how they incorporate autonomous solutions.

In a world rapidly advancing towards AI-driven innovation, SteerAI’s impact on industrial and logistical operations is just the beginning. Through ventures like these, the UAE is not just embracing the future; it’s actively shaping it.
