Restoring Vital Communications on Mayotte in the Wake of Cyclone Chido

Cyclone Chido left a trail of destruction across Mayotte, disrupting lives and essential services. In response, Free Group iliad and Axian Group, co-shareholders of the island’s leading mobile operator, Only, swiftly activated a crisis plan.

Their immediate focus has been on restoring vital communication services, safeguarding employees, and delivering much-needed aid to the Mahoran population.

“Our top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees and their families, as well as providing the Mahoran people with critical resources during this challenging time,” a joint statement from the groups emphasised. With 52 Mahoran staff members, Only has deeply embedded itself in the community, making the crisis response as personal as it is professional.

Restoring Connectivity: A Herculean Effort

Communication is a lifeline in any disaster, and restoring Mayotte’s network infrastructure became an immediate priority. Cyclone Chido inflicted severe damage on Only’s infrastructure, with around ten of its 54 mobile sites identified as destroyed. Despite these challenges, the field teams, operating under harsh conditions, have already restored five mobile sites in power-supplied areas like Mamoudzou and Kawéni, ensuring coverage for approximately 40% of the island’s population.

Rebuilding the network is no small feat. Teams remain on the ground conducting reconnaissance, assessing damage, and repairing infrastructure where possible. However, the restoration effort hinges on two critical factors: access to damaged sites and the reestablishment of the electricity grid. To expedite this process, nearly five tonnes of equipment have been dispatched from mainland France, while additional infrastructure and energy supplies have been mobilised from Madagascar and Tanzania.

Volunteers from Free Group iliad and Axian’s network teams have also stepped forward, bringing expert knowledge to accelerate recovery efforts. This collaborative approach underscores the unwavering commitment of both organisations to restoring connectivity and supporting the island’s recovery.

Solidarity with the Mahoran Population

Beyond restoring services, Free Group iliad and Axian Group have launched a series of initiatives to assist the Mahoran community. Recognising the immediate need for communication, Only’s local plans now offer free and unlimited voice, SMS, and data services in operational areas—a move designed to keep families connected during this crisis. Additionally, AXIAN Telecom’s Yas Comores subsidiary is preparing special offers to facilitate calls to Mayotte, further extending support to affected families.

Humanitarian aid has been another critical focus. Axian Group is coordinating the delivery of emergency supplies, including food and water, to support those in need. Meanwhile, Free Group iliad and Axian Group have jointly donated €80,000 to the French Red Cross and Secours Populaire, two organisations with longstanding commitments to the Mahoran community. These funds will bolster ongoing relief efforts and help provide essential services to those most impacted by the cyclone.

Harnessing Technology for Crisis Response

Innovative solutions have also come into play. The Free Foundation has pledged €50,000 to Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF), a non-profit specialising in emergency communication solutions. TSF’s arrival in Mayotte brings vital tools, including satellite and emergency network equipment, to isolated and hard-to-reach areas. Their efforts will not only aid affected populations but also enhance coordination at operational centres, streamlining the broader recovery effort.

To amplify support, Free Group iliad has encouraged its French employees to contribute to TSF, matching their donations to maximise impact. Subscribers are also being called upon to join the solidarity drive, reflecting a collective effort that spans beyond the organisations themselves.

Long-Term Commitment to Recovery

While immediate relief is critical, Free Group iliad and Axian Group remain committed to Mayotte’s long-term recovery. With plans to maintain ongoing support and expand restoration efforts in the coming weeks, the two organisations have reaffirmed their solidarity with the island’s population.

This partnership highlights a broader vision for socio-economic transformation. Axian Group, with operations in 17 countries and expertise across telecommunications, financial services, energy, and more, consistently prioritises sustainable and positive impacts. As a member of the United Nations Global Compact, the group integrates ethical and sustainable practices into its operations, exemplifying its dedication to communities like Mayotte.

A Collaborative Future

Cyclone Chido’s impact on Mayotte has been profound, but the resilience of the Mahoran people and the swift actions of Free Group iliad and Axian Group provide a glimmer of hope. Through collaborative efforts, innovative solutions, and unwavering commitment, these organisations are not just rebuilding infrastructure but also reinforcing the bonds of community and solidarity.

The road to recovery may be long, but with such determined support, Mayotte is on a path towards a stronger, more connected future.
