Gothenburg Revolutionises Urban Mobility with Congestion Charging Project
The city of Gothenburg is on the brink of transforming its urban mobility landscape as Kapsch TrafficCom, a global leader in intelligent transportation systems, completes the final stages of one of the world’s most ambitious congestion charging projects.
Commissioned by Trafikverket, Sweden’s national transport authority, the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion, enhance sustainability, and improve the overall quality of life for residents and commuters alike.
Seamless System Integration
After months of meticulous planning and implementation, the rollout and testing phases of the project have been successfully concluded. Kapsch TrafficCom now manages all charging and control points across the city. The system, which encompasses 100% of tolled passages in Gothenburg, processes over 150 million vehicle passages annually.
Carolin Treichl, EVP EMENA at Kapsch TrafficCom, expressed her enthusiasm: “After months of hard work, we are proud to reach this milestone. Our system now covers 100% of tolled passages in the city, meaning that we are processing over 150 million passages per year.”
The infrastructure overhaul required replacing legacy charging point systems. Remarkably, the upgrades were conducted during nights, weekends, and bank holidays to ensure minimal disruption to the city’s daily activities.
Each charging point, equipped with cameras and state-of-the-art technology, now enables automated vehicle identification, streamlining congestion management efforts.
A Decade of Operational Excellence
Once fully operational, Kapsch TrafficCom will oversee the system’s operations and maintenance for the next decade, with an option to extend the contract for two additional years.
This long-term partnership ensures the sustainability and reliability of Gothenburg’s congestion management framework. The comprehensive coverage of the city centre empowers authorities to take a proactive approach to traffic management, addressing congestion challenges before they escalate.
A Global Leader in Intelligent Mobility
Kapsch TrafficCom’s expertise in transportation solutions spans more than 50 countries, making it a trusted partner for governments and organisations worldwide.
The company’s innovative solutions focus on:
- Tolling and tolling services

Enhancing Urban Sustainability
The Gothenburg congestion charging project exemplifies the synergy between cutting-edge technology and sustainable urban development. By implementing advanced tolling systems, the initiative not only reduces traffic jams but also curtails vehicle emissions, paving the way for a healthier environment.
The system’s ability to identify vehicles automatically eliminates the need for traditional toll booths, ensuring smoother traffic flow and reducing idling times. This, in turn, contributes to lower carbon emissions—a win-win for the city and its residents.
Driving Future Innovations
Kapsch TrafficCom continues to push the boundaries of intelligent mobility. Its 2023/24 financial year performance underscores its global impact, with revenues reaching €539 million, driven by approximately 4,000 employees worldwide. This impressive portfolio cements its reputation as a leader in sustainable transportation technology.
As urban centres around the globe grapple with increasing congestion, projects like Gothenburg’s serve as a blueprint for future initiatives. The integration of advanced systems, coupled with a commitment to sustainability, sets a benchmark for cities aiming to enhance their mobility infrastructure.
Looking Ahead
Gothenburg’s congestion charging project is more than just a technological feat; it’s a testament to what can be achieved when innovation meets determination. By addressing congestion head-on and embracing sustainable practices, the city is setting a new standard for urban mobility.
For cities considering similar initiatives, the Gothenburg project offers invaluable insights into the planning, execution, and maintenance of advanced congestion management systems.
