Fagerhult unveils Ground-breaking AI Tool to Revolutionise Road Lighting Design
When it comes to road and street lighting, precision is everything. Navigating the intricate maze of standards, regulations, and project-specific requirements can feel like an uphill battle.
However, Swedish lighting giant Fagerhult has just unveiled a game-changing solution—an innovative AI-powered lens guide designed to simplify the process of selecting the ideal optics for any scenario. This revolutionary tool delivers accurate results in mere seconds, streamlining the design process and ensuring optimal lighting performance.
The Challenge of Precision Lighting
Designing efficient road lighting isn’t as straightforward as flicking a switch. Each road and project come with unique conditions, and while standards and guidelines provide direction, selecting the most appropriate optics often remains a complex and time-consuming task.
As Henrik Sandqvist, Product and Application Manager for Outdoor Lighting at Fagerhult, explains: “Those familiar with our luminaires and lenses are likely to know which lens and optics to choose to meet specific scenarios. But if you don’t have this knowledge, you can now use our AI tool to find out which lenses meet the requirements and provide the best and most efficient solution.”
Fagerhult’s new AI-powered lens guide is a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions. Designed as a complementary tool to the widely used Dialux lighting design software, this guide simplifies the selection process while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.
How the AI Lens Guide Works
At its core, the lens guide relies on cutting-edge predictive algorithms. Users simply input basic project data, such as:
- Pole distance
- Mounting height
- Overhang
- Road width
- Relevant national standards
With a single click, the AI tool generates three customised recommendations:
- The most energy-efficient solution
- The overall optimised solution
- The solution with the best G-class rating
The user then verifies the suggested options within Dialux. Sandqvist highlights the tool’s efficiency, noting how it eliminates the need for laborious trial-and-error testing: “Compared to testing one’s way between several possible alternatives, this is a significantly more efficient way of working.”
Developed Through Cutting-Edge Collaboration
The lens guide’s development was spearheaded by Martin Hübert, a CAE Engineer in Fagerhult’s Optics Development team, in partnership with Jönköping University’s Department of Computing. The collaboration harnessed over two million data points, split into training and verification datasets, to create precise AI models capable of making highly accurate predictions.
“We who develop optics sometimes get questions about more complex scenarios, but giving general answers is difficult,” says Hübert. “This tool considers a lot of data and always suggests the best lens for each scenario and choice. The matches are at a very high level, and we see other significant opportunities to refine our optics further.”
The sheer volume of data ensures that the AI model not only makes accurate predictions but also learns and improves over time, positioning Fagerhult as a leader in AI-driven lighting solutions.
Seamlessly Integrated with Fagerhult Configure
The AI lens guide is part of the broader Fagerhult Configure platform, which offers a suite of tools aimed at simplifying the planning and customisation of lighting systems. While the current iteration of the lens guide focuses on two-lane roads, plans are already underway to expand its functionality, making it applicable to a wider range of scenarios.
What’s more, the tool is accessible to both registered and non-registered users, reflecting Fagerhult’s commitment to inclusivity and customer empowerment. It’s clear that this isn’t just a tool for lighting experts—it’s designed for anyone involved in the planning and implementation of outdoor lighting.
A Glimpse Into the Future
Beyond its immediate capabilities, the AI lens guide represents a significant step forward in how AI can enhance the lighting industry. By combining vast amounts of data with intelligent algorithms, Fagerhult has laid the groundwork for future advancements, such as:
- Further refinement of optics through AI
- Expanded support for complex lighting scenarios
- Enhanced customer guidance for optimised project outcomes
“Many often choose a lens out of habit if it meets the requirements. This tool ensures that every decision is data-driven and informed by the best possible analysis,” concludes Hübert.
A Brighter Path Forward
With the introduction of its AI lens guide, Fagerhult is setting a new standard for efficiency and innovation in the lighting industry. This tool doesn’t just save time—it also ensures optimal results, empowering designers, engineers, and project managers to make confident, informed choices.
As Fagerhult continues to refine and expand its capabilities, one thing is certain: the future of road lighting has never looked brighter.
