TotalEnergies and Saudi Arabia Celebrate a Partnership Powering a Greener Future

TotalEnergies recently marked a significant milestone—fifty years of operations in Saudi Arabia. The celebration coincided with French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to the Kingdom, highlighting the enduring and evolving partnership between the energy giant and Saudi Arabia.

Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Saudi Minister of Energy, the event reinforced TotalEnergies’ commitment to supporting the Kingdom’s energy transition goals.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, captured the essence of this milestone, stating: “Saudi Arabia is emblematic of our multi-energy strategy aimed at supporting the energy transition of oil and gas-producing countries. Our activities to produce low-carbon and renewable energies contribute to the country’s Green Initiative and Vision 2030’s objectives. We look forward to continuing to build beautiful things there for years to come.”

Over the decades, TotalEnergies has strategically aligned with Saudi Arabia’s energy vision. From refining and petrochemicals to renewable energy projects, the partnership underscores a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability.

A Refining and Petrochemical Powerhouse

Jointly owned by Saudi Aramco (62.5%) and TotalEnergies (37.5%), SATORP stands as a beacon of industrial excellence. Located in Jubail and commissioned in 2014, it is one of the world’s most efficient integrated refining and petrochemical platforms. With a production capacity of 460,000 barrels per day, SATORP plays a critical role in meeting global energy demands.

In 2022, SATORP showcased its strategic importance by ensuring France’s energy security during the European diesel shortfall. The facility delivered approximately 300,000 tons of diesel to France, a testament to its reliability and operational scale.

SATORP has also embraced sustainability. In July 2022, it became the first platform in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region to receive ISCC+ certification, recognising its circular economy initiatives, including producing polymers from recycled plastic waste. This accomplishment not only sets an industry benchmark but also reinforces TotalEnergies’ commitment to innovative sustainability solutions.

Building the Future of Petrochemicals

The Amiral petrochemical complex represents another significant chapter in TotalEnergies’ partnership with Aramco. This $11 billion project, currently under construction and expected to launch in 2027, leverages synergies with SATORP. By integrating state-of-the-art technologies, the Amiral complex will strengthen Saudi Arabia’s downstream sector while fostering economic growth and job creation.

With its advanced capabilities, Amiral underscores the Kingdom’s strategic shift towards value-added industries, aligning seamlessly with Vision 2030’s objectives.

Illuminating Saudi Arabia’s Energy Transition

TotalEnergies’ renewable energy projects in Saudi Arabia exemplify its multi-energy strategy. The company is actively advancing solar energy initiatives to support the Kingdom’s target of a 50% renewable energy mix by 2030.

Key Solar Projects:

  • Wadi Al Dawasir Solar Plant (119 MW): Scheduled to go live in early 2025, this project is a collaboration between TotalEnergies, Toyota Tsusho, and Al Taqaa Zahid. It will contribute significantly to the national grid.
  • Rabigh 2 Solar Plant (300 MW): Developed in partnership with Aljomaih Energy and Water Company (AEW), this project was awarded through the National Renewable Energy Program’s (NREP) fifth round. With operations slated for 2026, it reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainable energy.

Additionally, TotalEnergies, through its subsidiary Safeer, is developing smaller-scale solar projects tailored for industrial and commercial clients, further diversifying the Kingdom’s renewable energy landscape.

Patrick Pouyanné remarked: “This new project is another example of our multi-energy strategy to accompany oil and gas-producing countries in their energy transition. It demonstrates our ability to provide more energy with fewer emissions while contributing to our growth in electricity and renewable energy.”

Sustainable Aviation Fuels: A Leap Towards Greener Skies

As global air travel continues to grow, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) have emerged as a pivotal solution for reducing carbon emissions. TotalEnergies, in collaboration with Aramco and the Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC), is spearheading SAF initiatives in the Kingdom.

SAF Development Highlights:

  • Co-processing Used Cooking Oil: By 2026, SATORP will begin producing SAF by co-processing used cooking oil, reflecting an innovative approach to circular economy principles.
  • Joint Development Agreement: TotalEnergies, Aramco, and SIRC have signed a Joint Development and Cost Sharing Agreement to explore the feasibility of a dedicated SAF production unit. This facility aims to convert local residues, such as animal fats and used cooking oil, into sustainable aviation fuels.

Amin H. Nasser, Aramco’s President & CEO, highlighted the importance of these efforts, stating, “Addressing transport emissions requires a wide range of approaches. This collaboration demonstrates our intent to leverage combined strengths, particularly as Saudi Arabia’s tourism and aviation sectors expand.”

These SAF projects align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, offering sustainable solutions that benefit domestic and international airlines while contributing to global decarbonisation efforts.

A Shared Commitment to Sustainability

At the heart of TotalEnergies’ operations in Saudi Arabia lies a steadfast commitment to Vision 2030. From fostering renewable energy projects to driving petrochemical innovations, the company plays an integral role in supporting the Kingdom’s ambitious goals. These initiatives not only reflect TotalEnergies’ adaptability in a changing energy landscape but also underline its dedication to sustainability.

As Patrick Pouyanné aptly noted: “By leveraging our collective expertise, we can take a further step towards the decarbonisation of air transport together. SAF is at the heart of our company’s transition strategy, as we strive to meet the aviation industry’s demand to reduce its carbon footprint.”

A Bright Horizon

TotalEnergies’ legacy in Saudi Arabia is a story of partnership, innovation, and resilience. From its flagship SATORP refinery to its groundbreaking SAF initiatives, the company continues to lead the way in energy transition efforts. With ambitious projects like the Amiral petrochemical complex and cutting-edge solar plants, TotalEnergies remains a vital contributor to Saudi Arabia’s sustainable future.

As the Kingdom strides confidently towards Vision 2030, TotalEnergies stands as a trusted ally, ready to power progress and illuminate the path to a greener, more sustainable tomorrow.
