Granite’s $78m Infrastructure Overhaul to Ease Traffic Woes in Anaheim

Granite has secured a $78 million contract from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to tackle one of Orange County’s most notorious traffic bottlenecks.

This extensive infrastructure project, slated to commence in April 2025, aims to alleviate congestion along the vital State Route 55 and State Route 91 (SR 55/91) interchange, promising a smoother and safer commute for thousands of drivers daily.

The initiative, which is being funded through a mix of state and federal sources, is part of Granite’s first-quarter Capital Allocation Plan (CAP). By the time work wraps up in October 2027, motorists can expect a transformed corridor featuring improved traffic flow, enhanced safety measures, and a robust, future-proof roadway design.

Bridge Reconstruction and Corridor Enhancements

At the heart of this ambitious undertaking is the demolition and reconstruction of a 320-foot-long concrete bridge. This upgrade will eliminate weaving and merging conflicts that currently plague the SR 55/91 interchange, significantly reducing congestion and improving overall traffic efficiency.

But that’s not all—this project extends beyond just a bridge replacement. Additional upgrades include:

  • Retaining walls and sound barriers to minimize environmental impact and enhance local community comfort.
  • Asphalt and concrete paving to create a durable, high-performance road surface.
  • Storm drainage improvements to bolster flood resistance and long-term roadway stability.
  • Modernized electrical systems to support smarter traffic management and roadway lighting.

This effort marks the first of three planned phases aimed at tackling the long-standing congestion challenges in the area, setting the stage for future improvements along the corridor.

A Landmark Project for Granite’s Los Angeles/Orange County Division

Granite, a cornerstone in the U.S. infrastructure sector, views this project as a milestone achievement for its Los Angeles/Orange County (LAOC) division.

“This project represents the largest local Caltrans project that Granite’s Los Angeles/Orange County (LAOC) team has captured to date,” said Scott McArthur, Granite’s Vice President of Regional Operations. “Additionally, this project allows Granite to continue to foster our two-time partnering award-winning relationship with District 12 and will also improve our ability to capture future opportunities with alternative delivery projects in the LA and Orange County market areas.”

Granite’s reputation for delivering high-quality infrastructure solutions has been reinforced through its strong partnership with Caltrans District 12. This collaboration has previously earned them multiple awards, demonstrating a consistent commitment to excellence in road construction and transportation management.

Addressing Congestion and Enhancing Mobility

The SR 55/91 corridor has long been a bottleneck, with high volumes of traffic causing daily delays for commuters and logistics operators alike.

By addressing the key structural and design inefficiencies, this project is expected to:

  • Reduce travel time by streamlining the merging and weaving patterns that currently slow down traffic.
  • Enhance road safety by creating a more predictable and controlled traffic environment.
  • Support economic growth by facilitating smoother transportation routes for businesses relying on timely deliveries.

Once completed, the improved interchange will offer a more efficient route for Orange County’s growing population and economy, reinforcing the region’s infrastructure for decades to come.

A Leader in Sustainable and Ethical Construction

Since its incorporation in 1922, Granite has been a major force in the U.S. construction industry, recognized for its commitment to quality, sustainability, and ethical business practices.

As America’s Infrastructure Company™, Granite continues to set benchmarks in safety, environmental responsibility, and innovative construction methodologies. With a well-earned reputation as an industry leader, the company ensures that its projects not only meet but exceed regulatory and community expectations.

A Modernised Future for Southern California Roads

This multi-million-dollar investment in Orange County’s infrastructure signals a shift towards a smarter, more resilient transportation network. With construction set to begin in just over a year, commuters, businesses, and local communities can look forward to a modernized, congestion-free roadway system that enhances both safety and mobility.

As Granite and Caltrans embark on this ambitious journey, one thing is certain—this project is a major step forward in shaping the future of Southern California’s transportation landscape.
