Eaton Driving Grid Modernisation and Electrification with $340m Plant Investment
Eaton, a global leader in intelligent power management, is making a significant move to strengthen the U.S. electrical grid by addressing the soaring demand for transformers.
With a $340 million investment, the company is ramping up production of three-phase transformers, essential for powering data centres, industrial applications, and grid modernisation efforts.
The new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Jonesville, South Carolina, marks Eaton’s third U.S. site dedicated to transformer production, reinforcing its long-term commitment to North American manufacturing.
The investment not only bolsters Eaton’s capabilities but also fuels economic growth, creating 700 jobs in South Carolina by 2027. This latest initiative pushes Eaton’s total investment in North American manufacturing for electrical solutions beyond $1 billion since 2023, reflecting its strategic focus on supporting the energy transition and electrification trends.
Addressing the Transformer Shortage and Power Demand Surge
The escalating demand for transformers has posed a significant challenge for the energy sector, with utilities, large-scale commercial ventures, and data centres requiring reliable and efficient power solutions. Eaton is stepping up to bridge this supply gap by enhancing its manufacturing capacity, ensuring a steady supply of essential components for an evolving energy landscape.
“Electrical power demand is increasing dramatically, and our solutions are at the heart of energy systems everywhere, from the utility grid to industrials, data centres, buildings and more,” said Mike Yelton, president, Americas Region, Electrical Sector at Eaton. “We’re grateful for the strong collaboration and support in South Carolina, where we have a long history of manufacturing and innovation. Eaton is continuing to increase production and add jobs there and across the U.S. to support affordable, reliable and clean energy.”
A New Hub for Advanced Manufacturing
Eaton’s decision to convert an existing Jonesville facility into a high-tech manufacturing site underscores its emphasis on innovation and efficiency. The site will be equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure the production of high-efficiency three-phase transformers, which play a critical role in modern electrical infrastructure.
Supported by local, state, and federal economic development incentives, the Jonesville expansion represents a significant milestone for South Carolina’s industrial growth. Eaton is also partnering with readySC and regional schools to facilitate workforce development, ensuring the availability of a skilled labour force to support its operations.
Economic Growth and Job Creation in South Carolina
Eaton’s expansion in South Carolina is a testament to the state’s robust manufacturing ecosystem and pro-business climate. The new facility in Union County is expected to generate 700 jobs, offering a substantial boost to the local economy. State and federal officials have welcomed the investment, highlighting its potential to enhance economic development and workforce opportunities.
“Eaton’s new operation in Union County, which will mean 700 new jobs for the local community, represents a major vote of confidence in South Carolina’s highly skilled, world-class workforce. This investment is a remarkable milestone for Eaton and Union County, and we celebrate the opportunities it will create throughout the state in the years ahead,” said South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
Senator Lindsey Graham echoed similar sentiments, stating: “South Carolina is a leader in manufacturing due to our talented workforce, quality of life and business environment. I welcome Eaton’s investment in Union County, further ensuring our state remains on the forefront of grid modernization.”
Senator Tim Scott and Congressman Ralph Norman also praised Eaton’s investment, with Scott noting: “This is great news! Eaton’s investment and expansion will create more job opportunities for the community and stimulate our local economy.” Norman added, “South Carolina continues to set the gold standard as a competitive, business-friendly state with a strong and growing workforce.”
Union County Supervisor Phillip Russell emphasised the local impact of Eaton’s expansion, stating: “We are pleased to welcome Eaton to Union County and acknowledge their investment and the new jobs opportunities they are introducing. Their considerable investment highlights the confidence global companies like Eaton have in Union County’s capability to address their needs.”
Expanding Manufacturing Beyond South Carolina
While the new Jonesville site represents a major development, Eaton is also reinforcing its presence in other regions. The company will continue manufacturing three-phase transformers at its two Wisconsin facilities in Waukesha, while single-phase, pole-mount, and pad-mount transformers will remain in production at its Nacogdoches, Texas site.
Eaton’s broader manufacturing expansion includes increased production of power distribution solutions, voltage regulators, switchgear, switchboards, and circuit breakers—critical components in modern energy systems. By ramping up its capabilities, Eaton is not only securing its market leadership but also helping meet the growing demand for resilient and efficient power infrastructure.
A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
Eaton’s investment in transformer manufacturing is more than just an expansion—it aligns with the company’s mission to drive sustainable energy solutions. With the world shifting towards electrification and renewable energy sources, reliable transformer technology is crucial to integrating renewables into the grid and ensuring stable power distribution.
Founded in 1911, Eaton has continually evolved to address the energy challenges of the modern world. Today, with revenues approaching $25 billion and a presence in over 160 countries, the company remains at the forefront of power management solutions.
By investing in advanced manufacturing, workforce development, and sustainable energy infrastructure, Eaton is not only supporting the power needs of today but also laying the foundation for a more electrified and efficient future.
