Indonesia Powers Up With Nation’s Largest Solar Plant
Indonesia has taken a bold stride towards sustainability with the inauguration of its largest ground-mounted solar power plant. Situated in Purwakarta, West Java, the 100 MWp facility is a milestone in the country’s renewable energy transition. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), this ambitious project is a key player in Indonesia’s commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions.
During the official launch, Jisman Hutajulu, Director General of Electricity at the ESDM, underscored the plant’s role in reshaping Indonesia’s energy landscape. The project’s completion in just seven months is nothing short of remarkable, highlighting the dedication and cooperation of various stakeholders in accelerating the shift from fossil fuels to clean energy.
Breaking Down the Project
Developed through a strategic partnership, the ground-mounted solar power plant is the result of collaboration between PT Aruna Cahaya Pratama (Aruna PV), PT PLN (Persero), and PT Besland Pertiwi. The operational oversight falls under PT Aruna Hijau Power (AHP), a company jointly owned by PT Aruna (80%) and PLN Batam (20%).
Adi Dharmanto, President Director of PT Aruna Hijau Power, detailed the plant’s impressive capabilities. Featuring 160,000 bifacial solar panels, each with a capacity of 630 Wp, and powered by 240 advanced inverters, the plant is expected to generate a staggering 150 GWh of electricity annually. This output will offset approximately 118,725 tons of CO2 emissions each year, reinforcing Indonesia’s commitment to cleaner energy sources.
Covering 80 hectares, this solar farm not only ranks as the country’s largest but also employs cutting-edge bifacial technology, which maximises energy capture by absorbing sunlight from both sides of the panels. Such innovations are crucial in ensuring efficiency and sustainability in large-scale solar installations.
Indonesia’s Growing Solar Energy Market
The completion of this landmark project aligns with Indonesia’s broader renewable energy ambitions. The government has set aggressive targets to increase the country’s renewable energy share, and solar power is at the forefront of this transformation. With its abundant sunshine and growing investment in green energy, Indonesia is positioning itself as a regional leader in solar energy development.
The rapid execution of the Purwakarta solar power plant reflects the nation’s readiness to adopt and implement large-scale renewable energy solutions. Additionally, such projects strengthen the local economy, creating jobs and fostering expertise in the solar energy sector.
