Cenntro Inc. has just raised the bar for zero-emission trucking. Its latest innovation, the BM860H, a second-generation hydrogen fuel cell Class 8 semi-tractor, has officially received the green light from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). And that’s no small feat in an industry often criticised for dragging its wheels when it comes to decarbonisation.

This hydrogen-powered juggernaut is the brainchild of Cenntro’s wholly owned subsidiary, Bison Motors Inc. Designed with commercial practicality in mind, the BM860H boasts a robust 210kW hydrogen fuel cell powertrain and an impressive estimated range of up to 528 miles. All this while maintaining a full payload and delivering zero tailpipe emissions.

EPA Approval and Safety Standards

Gaining EPA certification is a crucial step in legitimising any alternative-fuel vehicle in the U.S. market. The BM860H not only secured that stamp of approval but also complies with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), ticking the boxes for roadworthiness, emissions, and crash safety.

The truck is still awaiting final word from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which is known for its stringent emissions standards. Given California’s aggressive push for cleaner transport solutions, CARB certification would be a significant boost to the BM860H’s market potential, especially on the West Coast.

Hydrogen offers other benefits too. Unlike lithium batteries, fuel cells don’t suffer from performance degradation in extreme temperatures, making the BM860H more versatile across climates. With growing momentum behind hydrogen infrastructure, the timing couldn’t be better.

Cenntro is not just focused on innovation, but also on building a resilient, domestic manufacturing strategy. According to the company, the BM860H will be assembled in its Southern California facility, with the majority of its components sourced from U.S.-based suppliers.

This approach not only strengthens supply chain security but also supports local jobs and aligns with federal initiatives promoting domestic clean energy manufacturing. It could also make the BM860H eligible for various incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act and other state-level clean transport grants.

Why Hydrogen Trucks Matter

Despite the spotlight on battery EVs, hydrogen trucks are stepping into the limelight as essential pieces in the zero-emissions logistics puzzle. They offer longer range, faster refuelling, and superior payload capacity—traits that are critical for the freight and logistics sector.

According to the International Energy Agency, hydrogen could power more than 15 million commercial vehicles by 2050, if infrastructure and policy keep pace. That said, the current hydrogen fuelling network is still sparse, though expanding steadily thanks to public and private investment.

With Class 8 trucks accounting for nearly a quarter of all transportation emissions in the U.S., vehicles like the BM860H are vital to achieving net-zero goals.
