Game-Changing REMOS Flex Brings Remote Traffic Control to Short-Term Projects
In a major breakthrough for traffic management and road worker safety, SRL Traffic Systems has officially launched REMOS Flex, a remote-operated mobile signal solution tailored for flexible, short-duration projects. This next-generation tool is an extension of the company’s proven REMOS Max technology and is widely regarded as the UK’s first scalable solution for remote traffic signal control.
Originally developed for medium to long-term infrastructure schemes, REMOS technology has now evolved to support agile, short-term deployments. Highway authorities, contractors and traffic management operators finally have access to a versatile system that offers unprecedented safety, operational efficiency and environmental benefits.
Tackling the Industry’s Safety Crisis
Let’s not beat around the bush: road worker safety in the UK has reached a worrying state. In 2023 alone, over 12,300 road workers reported verbal or physical abuse while on duty. Shockingly, more than half said they were targeted at least once a week. Add to that the sobering average of seven construction worker fatalities and 93 serious injuries each year due to vehicle-related incidents, and the case for change becomes crystal clear.
Enter REMOS. By allowing traffic signals to be managed remotely, the system minimises the need for personnel to be physically stationed in live traffic lanes. The result? A safer, smarter worksite where fewer workers are exposed to unnecessary danger.
Iain McDonald, SRL’s REMOS Director, explained the intent behind the innovation: “Following many months of product development and intensive market familiarisation trials, SRL is excited to be able to offer the versatile REMOS Flex in addition to REMOS Max, putting improved road worker safety, operational efficiency, reliability and environmental sustainability within the reach of customers operating short-term as well as longer-term projects.”
High-Tech Simplicity with REMOS
So, how does it work? At the heart of REMOS is a blend of smart sensors, radar, and CCTV cameras mounted on portable traffic lights. These components detect and stream live footage of approaching traffic. The real magic happens when this data is fed into remote traffic management control (RTMC) boxes and transmitted to SRL’s Solihull Control Centre. There, trained staff analyse traffic patterns in real time and step in as needed to adjust signals and keep traffic flowing smoothly.
This isn’t just about convenience. REMOS eliminates human error caused by fatigue or poor visibility and performs reliably even in adverse weather conditions. Better still, one operator can oversee multiple sites simultaneously, helping contractors cope with persistent labour shortages.
SRL estimates that each REMOS deployment can save around 3,564 kg of CO2 annually per operative no longer required on-site. That’s not just a win for efficiency – it’s a bold step toward decarbonising the sector.
Flexibility in Action
The new REMOS Flex offering takes convenience and adaptability to the next level. Available in two-, three-, or four-way packages, the solution can be leased for both short and long-term use. Customers only need to provide two hours’ notice to activate remote operations, after which they can choose how to allocate up to 12 hours of monitoring and control each day. Extra hours are available for a fee, and the system can be deactivated at will.
When not in remote mode, REMOS Flex defaults to SRL’s patented Multiphase Advanced Detection System (ADS), which has been independently verified to reduce peak-hour queuing by up to 50%. Real-time data on traffic volume and speed is collected via radar and processed using adaptive algorithms that optimise signal timing.
Solar Power and Smart Energy
Another smart inclusion is SRL’s Solar PLUS technology. Each unit features solar-powered components alongside absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries that can be charged directly on board. This not only ensures uninterrupted operation but also boosts the system’s environmental credentials.
It’s sustainable, low-maintenance and designed for the unpredictable realities of UK weather.
Real-World Validation
The REMOS family’s real-world value has already been put to the test. During extensive 2024 trials and local authority pilot schemes across Greater Manchester and the Midlands, REMOS proved its mettle. Feedback from these trials directly influenced the creation of REMOS Flex, cementing the importance of customer-led innovation in delivering practical, real-world solutions.
This proactive approach is central to SRL’s strategy, which has already earned the company five consecutive RoSPA awards for health and safety excellence.
A Broader Portfolio of Solutions
REMOS Flex isn’t a standalone act. It’s the latest addition to SRL’s wide-ranging portfolio, which includes vehicle messaging systems (VMS), CCTV, pedestrian and traffic signals, ANPR tech, and work-zone barriers. Flagship products like Urban64 and Haul Route PLUS underscore the company’s commitment to integrating advanced technology with operational safety.
As one of Europe’s largest mobile intelligent traffic system providers, SRL serves not just construction and traffic management firms, but also event planners and utilities providers. Their blend of customisation and support places them firmly at the intersection of safety, innovation and sustainability.
Looking Ahead with Confidence
There’s no doubt about it: REMOS Flex is a timely innovation. With labour shortages, public hostility and environmental pressures all mounting, the need for remote, adaptive and low-impact traffic solutions is greater than ever. By reducing on-site headcount, improving system reliability and cutting emissions, REMOS Flex offers a holistic answer to some of the industry’s thorniest challenges.
Its success could set a precedent for how temporary traffic management is handled across the UK and beyond. And with SRL’s track record of award-winning safety practices, there’s every reason to believe this is only the beginning.
