RAPID Marks Milestone Year with PlantWorx Award Recognition
RAPID, the Registered Assets Police Information Database, has celebrated its first anniversary in style, clinching the Security Initiative Award at the PlantWorx Innovation Awards. Judges hailed the platform as βa game-changer for machinery security and a vital tool for tackling equipment theft.β The accolade underscores how swiftly the system has become an integral part of modern policing and plant protection.
Launched for police use in October 2024 after being announced in late 2023, RAPID was developed by Datatag as a web-based platform to address a long-standing issue in construction and agriculture: machinery theft. With criminals targeting everything from excavators to tractors, the industry has long sought a coordinated solution. RAPID, in its first year alone, has already compiled ownership data on more than 1.5 million assets, accessible to all 142,000 UK police officers and international users alike.
From a roadside check in Cornwall to a theft investigation in South Africa, officers can confirm machine identity in seconds via smartphone, with direct access to PNC integration. The result is faster recoveries, disrupted organised crime, and reduced downtime for contractors and hire firms.
Designed with policing at its core
The development of RAPID was spearheaded by Datatagβs technical team, with Lead Developer Adam Plaskitt at the helm. His vision, combined with frontline insights from Police Liaison Officer Vince Lane, ensured the platform was shaped to meet the real-world needs of officers. This collaborative approach between technology specialists and police practitioners has been central to RAPIDβs success.
As Lane put it: βRAPID was built with the police in mind. Officers donβt have time for complicated systems, they need fast, accurate checks that work at the roadside or on site. RAPID delivers that, and itβs helping give police the confidence and information they need to act decisively.β

Industry-wide benefits
The implications for the construction and agricultural sectors are significant. Plant theft has long been a thorn in the side of contractors, costing the industry millions each year in stolen machinery, insurance claims, and downtime. By streamlining machine identification, RAPID not only bolsters police action but also strengthens trust between hire companies, contractors, and insurers.
Kevin Howells, Managing Director of Datatag, said: βWinning this award at PlantWorx is a milestone moment for RAPID and recognition of the huge effort that has gone into making it a reality. In just a year since launch weβve gone from concept to a live system that every UK police officer can access in the fight against plant theft. This is technology and policing working hand in hand, and itβs already making a real difference for the industry and law enforcement alike.β
Technical achievement
Building RAPID was no small feat. The platform had to be robust, scalable, and secure, capable of handling millions of records while ensuring sensitive ownership details remain protected. For the developers behind it, the project has been both a challenge and a highlight.
Plaskitt reflected: βFrom a development perspective, RAPID has been one of the most exciting projects Iβve ever worked on. Weβve built something robust, secure, and scalable that can grow with the needs of both industry and law enforcement. Seeing it win an award at PlantWorx in its very first year is a huge endorsement of the hard work from the whole team.β
Recognition from the sector
The Construction Equipment Association (CEA), which represents manufacturers and stakeholders across the sector, has also thrown its weight behind RAPID. Viki Bell, CEO of the CEA, commented: βRAPID is an excellent development for our sector and the past year has already shown how effective it can be. Weβve seen a steady increase in searches by police, proving its value as a practical, everyday tool. It really is a game changer in the fight against machinery theft.β
Her words reflect the growing confidence across the industry that RAPID isnβt just another initiative but a fundamental shift in how asset protection is managed.

Looking to the future
With momentum on its side, RAPID is not standing still. The Datatag Plant and Logistics Team has confirmed that a new version of the system is due for release later this year, with additional features, expanded datasets, and enhanced functionality.
Or as the team put it: βthe best will keep getting better.β The next phase of RAPID will look to incorporate wider industry datasets, improved analytics, and more intuitive tools for police and contractors.
Global potential
While RAPID was designed first and foremost for the UK, its international potential is becoming clearer. Machinery theft is not a uniquely British problem, it plagues markets worldwide, from Europe to Africa to Latin America. A universal system capable of standardising asset verification across borders could have a transformative effect on how equipment is tracked, traded, and recovered globally.
By demonstrating proof of concept in the UK, RAPID may pave the way for international adoption and cross-border cooperation. That could, in time, significantly raise the cost of doing business for criminal networks that profit from stolen plant.
A promising road ahead
As RAPID passes its first anniversary, its achievements speak volumes. In a short time, it has secured industry confidence, won national recognition, and proven its worth to police officers on the ground. The fight against plant and machinery theft has always been a game of cat and mouse, but with RAPID in play, the odds are shifting in favour of law enforcement and the industry.
By combining technology with practical policing, RAPID is carving out a future where contractors, hire companies, and farmers can have greater confidence that their investments are protected.
