The longest tunnel of the Bar-Boljare Highway Project in Montenegro breaks through

After 694 days of hard work, Vjeternik Tunnel, the longest tunnel of Bar-Boljare Highway Project in Montenegro jointly built by China and Montenegro, was successfully broken-through on July 12 local time.

Connecting Bar in southern Montenegro and Boljare in northern Montenegro, the Bar-Boljare Highway is the first highway in Montenegro, and will be integrated into the national road network and connected with multiple European countries upon completion, which is of great significance for the overall economic development of Montenegro.

As a control project of Bar-Boljare Highway Project in Montenegro, the Vjeternik Tunnel has a single length of 5,891 linear meters, and is jointly built by The China Road & Bridge Corporation and Bemax, the largest infrastructure in Montenegro. With extremely complex geological structure and great difficulties in construction, the tunnel passes through the limestone and flysch zones simultaneously and encounters over 120 karst caves of various kind due to the development of karst in the limestone zone.

During construction, the Chinese and Montenegrin enterprises joined hands with each other, overcame diverse difficulties, and ultimately had the tunnel successively broken through by adhering to the principle of mutual complementary and win-win cooperation.

The Vjeternik Tunnel is the first highway tunnel project co-built by Chinese and local companies in central and eastern Europe. Its completion is of great significance for promoting the overall progress of the Bar-Boljare Highway Project, and for Chinese and overseas enterprises to accumulate management and control experience.
