RK Plant Engineers set new machine control heights with GKD Technologies
Established in 2015, Stockport based RK Plant Engineers is a family business run by father and son team, Ryan and Kenny Andres, who together have over 30 yearsβ experience in the rail and construction sectors. The company specialises in installing machine control and safety products including Rated Capacity Indicators, Height & Slew Limiters, and Machine Guidance.
RK Plant Engineers, director, Ryan Andres manages the companyβs operations and workload – he is also a highly experienced engineer and travels around the country installing various safety systems.
RK Plant was approached by GKD Technologies in 2018 and began installing GKD systems, which lead to the companyβs accreditation as an authorised GKD installer.Β Ryan commented on the collaboration with GKD, βSince we began working with GKD two-years ago we have installed in excess of 100 RCIβs and height and load limiters β GKD has kept us very busy! Β The majority of our installations are for the civils sector, but we also provide a maintenance service for GKD systems in the rail sector.β

RK Plantβs most recent install was for a GKD 1HL height limiter for a new customer, EPC Civil Engineering, which Ryan completed in less than 24 hours from receiving confirmation of the job, which was a LinkedIn lead.Β Being a βlone workerβ Ryan was able to respond to the install request, despite the COVID-19 crisis, and also adhere to all social distancing rules.
Ryan commented βEPC Civil Engineering contacted us via a LinkedIn message and wanted a height limiter installing the next day on a Doosan excavator for an urgent job β fortunately I had a GKD 1HL in stock and was able to fit it the following day.Β Of course, all safe distancing procedures were followed, in line with all of the installs I have carried out since the COVID crisis began.β
EPC Civil Engineering is a family-run drainage, civils, and plant hire firm operating nationally from bases in Northwich and Donington. The company is headed up by director, Eugene Crilly, who contacted RK Plant Engineering.

Eugene said, βSince the COVID pandemic we have had a number of sites closed but have managed to work βsafelyβ albeit at a greatly reduced capacity. We are due to install a sewer diversion directly under overhead mains power lines and adjacent to a pylon β therefore the restrictors are essential.β
Eugene continued, βThe reason I chose GKD is that I have used GKD on hired plant before and the brand is renowned as the industry leader.
βThe service I received from RK Plant Engineering was exceptional. I spoke with Ryan around 7pm the evening before and he was on-site at 8am the following morning. All the works were carried out and an onsite tutorial was issued before midday β I really couldnβt have asked for more.β

Before the COVID pandemic hit, RK Plant had carried out a number of interesting installs since it began working with the GKD product, βOne of the most unusual installs I have personally carried out was installing a GKD 2RCI load indicator with motion cut, which I fitted to a SENNEBOGEN 875 M βspecialβ port material handler for Forth Ports, whichΒ is the largest port group inΒ Scotland.β Reported Ryan.
He continued, βThe machine was a monster weighing in at almost 100 tonnes – the cab on the machine extends outwards, so all the cables for the system had to be run through the cab to enable it to extend, so instead of hydraulic motion cuts I had to install electronic motion cuts. The calibration took slightly longer than usual β but the install was seamless.β
Another out of the ordinary install for RK Plant was on a Case 580 backhoe loader, Β for The Environmental Agency, where Ryan fitted two GKD height limiters to the same machine, Ryan explained βI fitted a height limiter on the front loader arm of the machine and another on the rear backhoe. The front height limiter I had to use high-pressure valves and, on the rear, a standard valve β this was the first time I had ever fitted two of the same systems to one machine.β
RK Plant has found that RCIβs are becoming increasingly more important on machines as companies endeavour to meet with ever-increasing HSE requirements on jobsites, Ryan said, βAll these safety systems are becoming more paramount and they have to be installed for safety regulations β many of the key contractors have βspecificationsβ for machines that have to be met before they are allowed onto any of their sites.β

Ryan concluded, βThe GKD systems can be modified to suit many different variations of plant and machinery, which is why the brand is a market leader in civils and the preferred RCI for many hire companies and contractors.Β The systems are also extremely user friendly and reliable.
βOnce the current Covid-19 situation has abated, and the industry begins the journey to recovery, we are expecting a spike in demand for GKD systems, particularly with HS2 getting the green light and other key infrastructure projects.β
