Saudi Arabia and World Bank Join Forces to Launch Global Knowledge Hub in Riyadh

A bold new partnership between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the World Bank Group is set to redefine global collaboration on economic development.

The agreement, signed in Riyadh, paves the way for a pioneering Knowledge Hub (K-Hub) that will serve as a global centre for sharing ideas, research, and expertise to tackle pressing development challenges worldwide.

This partnership underscores Saudi Arabia’s growing role as a global player in fostering innovation and sustainable development. Meanwhile, the World Bank Group brings its unparalleled expertise in addressing global economic and social challenges to the table, promising a dynamic synergy with far-reaching implications.

The Vision Behind the Knowledge Hub

The K-Hub, to be hosted by Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Competitiveness (NCC), is not just another research facility. It is envisioned as a thriving platform for the exchange of global knowledge and best practices aimed at driving measurable impact.

According to Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, this initiative is a game-changer.

“Diversifying economies and driving policies that lead to a more competitive and efficient business environment are key to success. The new Knowledge Hub being created by the World Bank Group and Saudi Arabia is a key step forward to scale up and extend the wide reach of global knowledge critical to delivering such impact,” he stated.

Dr. Majid Al-Kassabi, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Commerce and Chairman of the NCC, added: “The K-Hub will serve as a dynamic international platform, empowering countries to leverage the extensive knowledge and experience of the World Bank Group, combined with the rich experiential expertise found within Saudi Arabia.”

Competitiveness and Diversification

Initially, the K-Hub will zero in on two critical themes: competitiveness and economic diversification. Within these broad areas, several sub-themes will be explored:

  • Business Environment Reforms: Sharing strategies for creating more robust, transparent, and efficient business climates.
  • Innovation Policy and Quality Infrastructure: Examining frameworks that encourage innovation and strengthen critical infrastructure.
  • Productivity Growth and Firm Capabilities: Boosting productivity and enhancing business competitiveness.
  • Exports Diversification and Trade Policy: Promoting a broader range of export options and refining trade strategies.
  • Data Strengthening: Leveraging big data and analytics to inform policy decisions and development efforts.

This multi-faceted approach ensures that the K-Hub will cater to a diverse set of development priorities, offering tailored solutions for participating nations.

Saudi Arabia’s Role as a Competitiveness Leader

Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Competitiveness (NCC) has already established itself as a powerhouse of reform and innovation. By implementing over 800 economic and developmental reforms, the NCC has propelled the Kingdom to the forefront of global competitiveness rankings.

The NCC’s success has sparked international interest, with many nations eager to replicate its model. By hosting the K-Hub, the NCC aims to share its expertise and further enhance its reputation as a leader in driving transformative economic change.

“The K-Hub represents the next evolution of our mission,” Dr. Al-Kassabi explained. “It’s a beacon of innovation and collaboration, designed to empower nations with actionable insights and proven strategies.”

A Catalyst for Change

The World Bank Group’s involvement ensures that the K-Hub will benefit from a wealth of global development expertise. The organisation’s mission—to create a world free of poverty on a livable planet—is a testament to its commitment to addressing complex global challenges.

Comprised of entities like the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the International Development Association (IDA), and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group has a proven track record of delivering results. Through the K-Hub, this expertise will be channelled into actionable strategies for participating nations.

A Step Towards Global Impact

By establishing the K-Hub, Saudi Arabia and the World Bank Group are setting the stage for a new era of international cooperation. The Hub is more than a repository of knowledge; it is a catalyst for action, designed to help nations overcome development obstacles and achieve sustainable growth.

For Ajay Banga, this partnership is about scaling impact. “This Hub is not just about research; it’s about implementation—ensuring that knowledge translates into results,” he emphasised.

Opportunities for Collaboration and Growth

The Knowledge Hub isn’t limited to government entities; it also opens doors for collaboration with academia, private enterprises, and non-governmental organisations. This inclusive approach ensures that diverse perspectives contribute to the development of innovative solutions.

Furthermore, the K-Hub’s emphasis on capacity building means that participating nations will gain access to training programmes, workshops, and resources designed to empower local stakeholders.

Why Riyadh?

Choosing Riyadh as the K-Hub’s base is no accident. The city is rapidly emerging as a global nexus for innovation and business, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 goals. By situating the Hub in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia underscores its commitment to becoming a leader in global economic development.

The NCC’s proven track record of driving competitiveness reforms further cements Riyadh’s suitability as the K-Hub’s home. The city offers the perfect blend of resources, expertise, and ambition to ensure the Hub’s success.

A Promising Future

The World Bank Group–Saudi Arabia Knowledge Hub promises to be a transformative force in global development. By bringing together cutting-edge research, real-world expertise, and a commitment to actionable solutions, the K-Hub is set to leave an indelible mark on the world stage.

For nations eager to tackle challenges like economic diversification, innovation, and productivity growth, the K-Hub offers a golden opportunity. It’s not just a hub—it’s a harbinger of change.
