Mining Resumes at Dalgaranga Gold Project in Western Australia
Spartan Resources has officially received the green light to commence underground mining and processing operations at the Dalgaranga gold project in Western Australia. This milestone comes after securing all necessary regulatory approvals, marking a pivotal moment for the company and the region’s mining industry.
With approvals granted by the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) and the Department of Water and Environment Regulation (DWER), Spartan Resources is transitioning from development to full-scale production. This significant step follows the completion of the Juniper Exploration Drill Drive decline development, positioning the company to tap into high-grade underground deposits with renewed vigour.
Enhanced Processing Facilities
Spartan’s approval also covers major upgrades to the existing processing plant, which will undergo modifications to improve efficiency and sustainability. The additions include:
- Ball Mill and Pre-Leach Thickener: Enhancing the recovery of gold from underground ore.
- Paste Plant: Utilising recovered tailings as feedstock to provide structural back-fill support, maximising ore recovery at each mining level.
These upgrades aim to optimise production while ensuring minimal environmental impact, a balance Spartan is committed to maintaining. Additionally, the approvals facilitate re-mining of tailings from the disused Gilbey’s Tailings Storage Facility, feeding the Paste Plant and further contributing to the project’s sustainability efforts.
Water Management and Environmental Responsibility
In a region where water management is crucial, Spartan has secured permission to dewater the now-defunct low-grade Gilbey’s Open Pit. This initiative aligns with the company’s broader strategy to responsibly manage environmental impacts while maximising resource recovery.
Existing approvals also support the Golden Wings in-pit tailings storage facility, boasting a remaining capacity of 23 million cubic metres. These provisions reinforce Spartan’s commitment to leveraging existing infrastructure to minimise its environmental footprint.
A Pragmatic Approach to Regulation
Simon Lawson, Spartan Resources’ Interim Executive Chair, expressed gratitude for the efficient and collaborative approach of regulatory agencies during the approval process.
“The robust technical work undertaken by our in-house approvals and development team, alongside our valued technical consultants, has demonstrated the low environmental risks associated with the Dalgaranga operation,” Lawson said.
He emphasised the company’s readiness to move forward, leveraging the high-grade Never Never and Pepper deposits to restart operations systematically. This approach will not only create jobs but also boost local communities in the Murchison region.
The Strategic Location of Dalgaranga
Situated 475 kilometres north-east of Perth and 65 kilometres north-west of Mount Magnet, the Dalgaranga gold project occupies a strategic position in one of Australia’s most resource-rich regions. Its location offers logistical advantages and access to skilled labour, further strengthening its potential as a significant contributor to the local economy.
The restart of mining at Dalgaranga isn’t just a win for Spartan Resources—it’s a win for the local community. The project promises to create jobs and stimulate economic growth, particularly in the Murchison region, known for its mining heritage. By integrating advanced technologies and sustainable practices, Spartan aims to set a benchmark for modern mining operations.
A Bright Future Ahead
With final approvals secured, Spartan Resources is poised to advance towards production recommencement at Dalgaranga. The company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community impact underscores its vision for a thriving mining operation.
As the next chapter unfolds, the Dalgaranga project serves as a testament to the potential of responsible mining practices in driving economic growth and environmental stewardship.
