Pioneering Dozer Automation and Mining Safety in Indonesia

In a ground-breaking step for the mining industry in Southeast Asia, PT Pamapersada Nusantara (PAMA) has become the first open-pit coal mining contractor in the region to integrate advanced automation technology into its operations.

At the heart of this initiative is RCT, a globally recognised leader in autonomous solutions, whose cutting-edge technology has been implemented across PAMA’s dozer fleet at its Kalimantan coal mine site in Indonesia.

This strategic move highlights the increasing prioritisation of safety and operational efficiency in mining, an industry notorious for its high-risk working conditions. PAMA’s adoption of automation marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of mining safety practices in Indonesia and beyond.

Enhancing Safety for Operators

PAMA’s Kalimantan coal mine is no stranger to the challenges that come with large-scale mining operations. Bulldozers frequently operate in hazardous areas, including tailing ponds, dams, and land-clearing zones riddled with risks like mud, water, steep cliffs, and unstable ground. Recognising these inherent dangers, PAMA sought a solution that would significantly mitigate risks for its operators.

“This project is an important and historic moment for improving operational safety management in the Indonesian coal mining world,” said Pak Ridha, SHE Management Development Department Head at PAMA.

The company turned to RCT for its proven expertise in developing autonomous mining solutions. RCT equipped PAMA’s Komatsu dozer fleet—comprising the D155 and D375 models—with Line-of-Sight (LoS) remote control technology and portable vision systems. These upgrades not only give operators enhanced visibility but also allow them to perform their duties from a safe distance, far removed from potentially life-threatening environments.

“As we know, mining involves several high-risk areas related to bulldozer work. With this application of technology, the level of risk in these areas can be reduced significantly,” Mr Ridha explained.

Tailored Solutions for Tailings and Tensions

Tailings ponds and dams are among the most treacherous areas of a mine site, posing constant dangers such as slips, equipment entrapment, and unstable ground conditions. For this reason, the introduction of RCT’s automation technology has been hailed as a game-changer for PAMA.

“The solution was ideal to dramatically improve safety, removing the operators from the dozer and allowing them to carry out their role from a safe position on site,” said Shane Smith, RCT’s Account Manager.

By reducing the need for operators to be physically present in such precarious areas, RCT’s technology not only enhances worker safety but also ensures operational continuity in challenging environments.

Bespoke Innovation

The deployment of automation at PAMA’s Kalimantan site was no off-the-shelf solution. RCT’s bespoke division, RCT Custom, played a critical role in tailoring the technology to meet the unique demands of the project.

“We firmly believe in catering to a client’s exact needs, so this is where our custom department is so important. They can create and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions, which is what RCT prides itself on delivering,” Mr Smith noted.

One key innovation was the integration of portable vision systems, which provide operators with clearer, real-time visuals of their machinery and its surroundings, further boosting safety and efficiency.

Collaboration and the Path Forward

The success of the project can be attributed to the strong collaboration between PAMA and RCT. Mr Smith was quick to praise PAMA’s professionalism and openness to adopting new technologies.

“They have been fantastic to work with, very professional and kind, with a great ability to understand the technology,” he said.

This sentiment was echoed by Mr Ridha, who emphasised that the automation initiative is not just about addressing immediate safety concerns but also about building long-term competencies.

“The site will continue to develop and implement this new competency, which will become a competitive advantage for PAMA to develop and support business sustainability,” he added.

A Milestone for the Region

PAMA’s partnership with RCT sets a benchmark for other mining operators in the region. By embracing automation, PAMA has demonstrated that prioritising safety does not come at the expense of productivity—instead, it enhances it.

For RCT, the project is a testament to the company’s ability to deliver innovative and impactful solutions tailored to the mining sector’s evolving needs.

“We’re proud to have worked on such a notable project in the region,” Mr Smith remarked, reflecting the shared sense of achievement between both companies.

Leading the Way Towards Safer Mining

As mining operations become increasingly complex, the adoption of automation and other advanced technologies is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. PT Pamapersada Nusantara’s historic step towards automation not only raises the bar for safety standards but also serves as a model for how the industry can adapt to meet future challenges.

With innovation at the forefront, the Kalimantan project underscores a broader shift towards sustainable, efficient, and safer mining practices. It’s a win-win scenario: protecting workers, enhancing productivity, and laying the groundwork for a resilient future in the mining sector.
