JCB Expands Electric Compact Excavator Line with the 8008E CTS
JCB continues to push the boundaries of zero-emission construction equipment, unveiling its latest addition to the electric excavator family—the 8008E CTS.
Introduced at the Executive Hire Show, this innovative micro excavator joins the successful 19C-1E in JCB’s E-TECH range, delivering the same rugged performance as its diesel counterpart but without the emissions.
Building on its legacy of reliability, JCB has engineered the 8008E CTS to mirror the structure, bodywork, and dig-end of the conventional diesel-powered 8008 CTS. The only major difference? Instead of a diesel engine, it features an electric motor that drives the hydraulic pump using JCB’s proven battery and powertrain technology.
Key Features of the JCB 8008E CTS:
- 9.9kWh battery for a full day’s operation
- Sub-1.0 tonne operating weight—easily transportable behind a van or pick-up
- Tubular boom with top-mounted ram and internal hose routing
- Extending undercarriage for greater access and stability
- 110V and 230V charging options for on-site convenience
This combination of features ensures that the 8008E CTS is as capable as its diesel counterpart while significantly reducing noise and environmental impact.
A Closer Look at the Electric Excavator
From the outside, the electric 8008E CTS looks nearly identical to its diesel-powered twin. However, beneath the canopy, the combustion engine has been replaced with a high-voltage battery pack, an inverter, and a DC-DC converter. These power the hydraulic pump, which, in turn, drives the machine’s tracking and dig-end hydraulics.
The machine delivers 9.3kN of bucket tearout force and 4.6kN of dipper tearout force, maintaining the same performance levels as the diesel model.
With a travel speed of 1.8kph and a drawbar pull of 7.75kN, operators will find no difference in handling, except for the significantly quieter operation. The noise level at the operator’s station is just 66dB(A), while external noise is reduced to 80dB(A), making it perfect for noise-sensitive sites, indoor work, and urban environments.
Fast, Flexible Charging for Maximum Uptime
Charging the 8008E CTS is designed for efficiency and convenience. The machine comes with an onboard charger that supports both 110V and 230V power supplies:
- 230V supply: Charges from 20-80% in just three hours
- 110V supply: Takes 5.5 hours to reach the same charge level
The charging port is conveniently located at the rear of the machine, accessible through a door in the upper bodywork.
Operator-Friendly Controls and Safety Features
JCB has ensured a seamless transition for operators moving from diesel to electric models. The only change in the cab is a revised instrument panel, which includes:
- A battery charge meter
- A blue LED light indicating the machine is powered on
- A green LED light showing active charging
- A red LED light to signal faults
For added safety, the machine is fitted with a TOPS (Tip Over Protection Structure) frame, an LED boom working light, a key immobiliser, and a beacon kit for the canopy frame. Optional extras include a variety of buckets, Livelink Lite telematics, and a seatbelt-engaged green beacon.
A Game-Changer for Plant Hire and Urban Projects
With zero tailpipe emissions, ultra-low noise, and reduced maintenance costs, the 8008E CTS is a perfect fit for urban, indoor, and tunnel projects where emissions and noise restrictions are a concern. It also presents an attractive option for plant hire companies, especially for rental customers who may not be familiar with diesel engine maintenance.
Unlike diesel models, the electric 8008E CTS eliminates the need for engine oil, fuel, and air filters, significantly reducing servicing costs. With fewer moving parts, downtime is minimised, allowing customers to get more from their investment.
The Future of Compact Excavators is Electric
JCB’s expansion of its E-TECH range with the 8008E CTS reaffirms its commitment to sustainable construction equipment.
As the industry moves towards greener alternatives, this micro excavator provides a powerful yet environmentally friendly solution, proving that performance doesn’t have to be sacrificed for sustainability.
