VolvoCE Launches World’s First Full-Size Electric Articulated Haulers at bauma
Volvo Construction Equipment has once again charged ahead in the race toward a sustainable future. At bauma 2025, the company unveiled the A30 Electric and A40 Electric—marking the world’s first battery-electric articulated haulers in their size class to go into serial production.
This revolutionary step is far more than just a technical milestone; it’s a bold stride toward zero-emission operations in industries historically reliant on diesel power.
Announcing that select customers in Europe can expect deliveries from 2026, Volvo CE is aiming squarely at transforming quarrying, mining, and construction operations. With a payload capacity of 29 and 39 tonnes respectively, these all-electric giants combine heavy-duty hauling with clean energy performance—bringing sustainable innovation to the frontlines of infrastructure development.
Decarbonising with performance to match
It’s one thing to build an electric hauler—it’s another to match the performance of its diesel-driven ancestors. But Volvo CE hasn’t cut any corners. The A30 and A40 Electric models are designed to deliver the same rugged off-road capabilities that customers have come to expect, now bolstered by the benefits of electric operation: fewer vibrations, quieter performance, and of course, zero tailpipe emissions.
Mats Sköldberg, Head of Technology at Volvo CE, summed up the game-changing development: “These electric haulers mark a major step forward in our ambition to decarbonize construction, combining the same unbeatable performance our customers know and love, with a more sustainable operation. As the world’s first battery powered articulated haulers of their size class, we are proud to continue to evolve our portfolio by bringing our world-class electric technology into a brand new segment.”
When powered by renewable energy, the A30 Electric achieves a total lifecycle CO2 reduction of 84%, while the A40 Electric reaches an even more impressive 90% savings compared to diesel counterparts.
Plug in and get to work
Built with powerful lithium-ion batteries, both haulers are optimised for runtimes of 4 to 4.5 hours in standard use. In ideal conditions, they can stretch up to 7 hours—enough for most daily operations in enclosed environments. They’re especially well-suited for applications like:
- Tunnel excavation and underground construction
- Quarrying and aggregates transport
- Downhill haulage and uphill return cycles
Recharging doesn’t mean waiting around either. When connected to a DC fast-charging station with up to 350kW capacity, both models can go from 20% to 80% charge in about an hour. That keeps operations flowing and downtime minimal.
A new generation inside and out
These electric trailblazers aren’t just cleaner; they’re smarter, too. They inherit the cutting-edge upgrades introduced in Volvo CE’s recent overhaul of its conventional articulated hauler line-up. With this platform refresh—part of the largest product renewal in decades—customers enjoy a slew of benefits:
- Advanced operator-assist systems that help avoid accidents
- Enhanced visibility and lighting for safer manoeuvring
- Simplified maintenance for better uptime
And let’s not forget comfort. The cab design has taken a leap forward. New handrails, repositioned doors, and guided entry lighting make access safer. Meanwhile, operators can customise their environment via the intuitive Volvo Co-Pilot display, which integrates controls for media, cameras, climate, and performance data.
The digital instrument cluster provides real-time insights, while electric drive means a quieter, smoother ride. Reduced exposure to nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) also makes the air cleaner for everyone working nearby.
Smart tools for smarter work
Volvo CE continues to raise the bar with its suite of integrated tech tools. Operators and fleet managers can use the My Equipment app to monitor:
- Machine hours
- Energy consumption
- Charging status
These features work whether you’re onsite or halfway across the globe. Pair that with Haul Assist—a set of intelligent tools designed to optimise fuel efficiency, monitor load utilisation, and enhance cycle times—and you’ve got a productivity powerhouse.
One step in a broader strategy
This launch isn’t happening in a vacuum. It’s part of a broader push by Volvo CE to electrify its entire portfolio and accelerate the construction industry’s journey toward net-zero emissions. The company recently unveiled an updated generation of conventional articulated haulers, reinforcing its dedication to offering both electric and combustion-powered machines depending on where customers are in their transformation journey.
In fact, more than 35% of Volvo CE’s product line has already been updated as part of this sweeping renewal. The result? A portfolio that’s more efficient, more sustainable, and more attuned to modern construction challenges than ever before.
Limited release, limitless potential
Starting in 2026, a limited batch of the A30 and A40 Electric haulers will be made available to selected customers across Europe. Volvo CE plans to scale up production in the years following, based on market feedback and infrastructure readiness.
This staggered roll-out strategy will allow Volvo CE to gather crucial insights, ensuring that these cutting-edge machines not only meet performance expectations but exceed them in real-world scenarios.
A brighter road ahead
Volvo CE’s new electric haulers aren’t just machines—they’re a promise of what’s to come. By fusing high-capacity performance with emissions-free operation, they point to a future where productivity and sustainability go hand in hand.
And for construction firms, mining operators, and infrastructure investors seeking to stay competitive in a greener economy, this launch offers an exciting—and practical—glimpse into the next era of heavy equipment.
