Holcim UK Expands Footprint with Strategic Sharpness Asphalt Plant Acquisition

Holcim UK has set its sights firmly on the future with the acquisition of an asphalt plant in Sharpness, Gloucestershire. A calculated play that bolsters its regional influence and fuels its long-term growth trajectory.

As the company continues to invest in sustainable infrastructure and accessible services, this latest move slots seamlessly into its broader strategy to strengthen its Express Asphalt network and extend its reach across the South West.

Cementing its presence in the South West

Located strategically next to the Sharpness Wharf, the newly acquired plant from Sharpness Asphalt Limited is anything but a modest addition. With proximity to key transport links and a growing demand for agile infrastructure delivery, this site is primed to become a flagship hub in Holcim’s expanding portfolio.

Lee Sleight, CEO of Holcim UK, commented: “We are pleased to announce the acquisition of the Sharpness plant and are looking forward to it being part of Holcim in the UK. This acquisition further strengthens our position in the asphalt market and bolsters our presence in the Gloucester and South West area. We see it as being a perfect fit for our Express Asphalt business and we are excited to see what it can offer to customers in the area.”

It’s not just about laying down asphalt. This acquisition reflects a strategic alignment with Holcim’s nationwide commitment to accessible, quick-turnaround services and community-centric infrastructure solutions.

What to expect from the Sharpness site

The Sharpness plant will temporarily close for several weeks to undergo essential remedial works, after which it will reopen as an official Holcim Express Asphalt site. These sites cater specifically to small-load collection customers, guaranteeing 30-minute turnaround times for single-product loads.

This is a big deal for local contractors who need speed, reliability, and convenience.

Once operational, customers can expect:

  • Fast-track service with guaranteed 30-minute turnarounds

  • Dedicated tip-off facilities for returns

  • On-site shop with essential tools, PPE, and materials

  • Refreshments and break facilities

  • Free WiFi and clean restrooms

In other words, it’s a one-stop shop for busy tradespeople looking to grab-and-go without compromising on quality or service.

Driving sustainable growth through innovation

This move isn’t just about logistics—it’s part of Holcim’s overarching mission to transform how the construction industry operates in a decarbonising world. The company is actively working to become net-zero before 2050, and every new asset is another cog in the wheel of that ambitious plan.

Holcim UK’s sustainable vision is woven into every layer of its operations:

  • Decarbonisation through green tech and materials

  • Circularity via reuse and recycling strategies

  • Nature-based solutions enhancing biodiversity across project sites

By reinforcing its Express Asphalt service with an eco-conscious operational model, Holcim is not only meeting the needs of the market—it’s helping shape it.

A holistic portfolio that covers ground

Holcim UK currently operates more than 200 sites and employs around 4,000 professionals across the country. Its product and service range runs the full construction spectrum, from aggregates and asphalt to ready-mix concrete, mortars, cement, landscaping, and full-contracting solutions.

This makes the Sharpness plant more than just a standalone facility. It’s part of an interconnected network delivering on the promise of smart, sustainable infrastructure from foundation to rooftop.

They get access to a streamlined, customer-friendly service model that is both reliable and aligned with the future of sustainable construction.

The acquisition marks another step in Holcim’s journey to reshape the built environment for the better, not just through strategic growth, but through responsible, purpose-driven development. The Sharpness site may be a single dot on the map, but its impact is set to ripple far beyond.
