JCB Marks 80 Years with a £100 Million Investment in UK Manufacturing
As JCB celebrates its 80th birthday, the iconic British manufacturer is marking the occasion not just with cake and candles, but with a visionary £100 million investment at its global headquarters in Rocester, Staffordshire. The announcement underscores JCB’s long-term commitment to British manufacturing and engineering innovation, securing its position at the forefront of the global construction equipment industry.
The centrepiece of this major investment is a state-of-the-art, fully automated powder paint facility costing £60 million. Alongside this, JCB will undertake a full modernisation of its shop floor, installing new machining centres, friction welders, and cylinder boring machines designed to boost efficiency, precision, and sustainability across production.
This development reinforces JCB’s dedication to maintaining its roots in the UK while continuing to expand its international footprint. With over 19,000 employees worldwide, including more than 8,000 in the UK, the company remains one of Britain’s great industrial success stories.
Investing where it all began
Marking the dual celebration of both JCB’s 80th anniversary and his own 80th birthday, Chairman Anthony Bamford reflected on the company’s journey and its future. He emphasised the enduring value of British engineering and craftsmanship.
“Basing JCB in the UK makes business sense, just as it has always made business sense. The work ethic in our country remains strong, especially in the Midlands, with its deep engineering heritage,” said Lord Bamford. “It makes perfect sense to invest heavily in our British factories and the £100 million we are investing now will put us at the forefront of our industry. Obviously, we are expanding overseas, not least in America, where we have been for decades. But the UK is our home.”
Bamford’s remarks highlight the company’s philosophy of innovation grounded in heritage. While JCB continues to grow in international markets, it remains proudly anchored in British soil. Nearly three-quarters of its UK production is exported, yet its domestic investment continues to drive both national economic contribution and global competitiveness.

Celebrating the people behind the machines
In a move that reflects the company’s appreciation for its workforce, JCB announced that all 19,000 employees worldwide would receive an extra day’s holiday to commemorate the milestone. The gesture recognises the collective contribution of employees past and present, whose craftsmanship and dedication have powered JCB’s rise from a small Midlands workshop to an international powerhouse.
Anthony Bamford’s personal connection to the company runs deep, he was born on the very same day, 23 October 1945, that his father, Joseph Cyril Bamford, founded JCB. Eight decades later, the family-led enterprise remains a shining example of British entrepreneurship and resilience.
Dyson hails Bamford’s leadership
Among the many tributes marking the anniversary, inventor and industrial designer Sir James Dyson praised Lord Bamford’s extraordinary achievements. “Anthony Bamford is a wonderful example to us all for his entrepreneurship, his engineering, design, and manufacturing. He has built what was a small British manufacturing company into one which is a true global success story and one we are all very proud of.”
Dyson’s comments capture the admiration JCB commands within the engineering community. Under Bamford’s leadership, JCB has become synonymous with innovation, quality, and international prestige.
80 machines for 80 years of innovation
To further commemorate this milestone, JCB has unveiled 80 limited-edition machines, a symbolic nod to each year of the company’s existence. The special production run features two of JCB’s most iconic models: the 4CX Pro Dual Drive backhoe loader and the 542-70 AGRIPRO Loadall.
Each of the 80 machines embodies the company’s reputation for precision and performance. Finished in satin black with chrome decals and signature JCB yellow highlights, the machines also feature unique 80th Edition embroidered seats, carpets, plaques, and decals, an aesthetic tribute to JCB’s heritage of craftsmanship.
A JCB spokesperson commented: “80 years is a significant milestone, and we are delighted to celebrate it with the production of 80 limited edition machines.”
A legacy of British innovation
Since its founding in 1945, JCB has redefined the boundaries of construction and agricultural machinery. From its first tipping trailer to the development of world-class excavators, Loadalls, and backhoe loaders, JCB’s history mirrors the evolution of modern construction technology.
Today, JCB operates 22 factories across four continents, producing over 300 different machines for the construction, agriculture, waste, and power generation sectors. Despite its vast international footprint, the company continues to lead with its core values of innovation, quality, and reliability.
Engineering for the next generation
The new powder paint plant represents more than a technological upgrade; it symbolises JCB’s commitment to sustainable and intelligent manufacturing. Powder coating is known for its environmental advantages, producing less waste, fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and a more durable finish than traditional paint methods. This move aligns with JCB’s broader sustainability goals, ensuring the company’s manufacturing practices evolve alongside global environmental standards.
As the construction industry accelerates its digital transformation, JCB is investing heavily in research and development to integrate smarter, cleaner technologies across its equipment portfolio. Its recent innovations in hydrogen combustion engines and electric machinery demonstrate the company’s forward-thinking approach to decarbonisation.

The next chapter in JCB’s story
This significant investment comes at a time when global manufacturing faces new challenges and opportunities. Supply chain resilience, automation, and green technologies are reshaping the industrial landscape. JCB’s decision to invest at home, modernising its production capabilities in Staffordshire, signals both confidence in the British workforce and a clear strategic direction.
By pairing advanced automation with its renowned engineering expertise, JCB is future-proofing its operations while reaffirming its role as a global leader in construction equipment. For the company that has become a byword for diggers and loaders worldwide, the next 80 years promise to be as dynamic and pioneering as the last.
Building on British strength
As JCB turns the page on its ninth decade, its story remains one of determination, innovation, and national pride. From a modest start in a lock-up garage to becoming a global giant, the company embodies the best of British industry, blending craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.
JCB’s latest investment isn’t just about new machines or modernised facilities. It represents faith in the future of British engineering, a commitment to sustainability, and an enduring belief that progress and tradition can coexist.
The diggers may have changed, the technology may have advanced, but JCB’s philosophy remains constant: innovation that moves the world.
