Woodway Engineering, a major emergency services’ provider and Acklea, a traffic management vehicle specialist, have joined forces to develop an illumination system to help protect vulnerable road side workers.
Both companies understand the hazards faced by workers who operate in demanding road situations, on busy motorways, at night time and in poor weather conditions.
The mast and lighting system is designed to illuminate the operator’s working area providing a safe working environment and is helping to improve the efficiency of road side vehicles; this system has also received the approval of Highways England.
To help provide a highly illuminated working area the mast can be extended to a height of 2.5 meters above the fixed base and is equipped with efficient LED flood and spot lights giving up to 32,000 lumens of light output. The operator can pan and tilt the light heads in any direction using a user-friendly handset operated from either inside or outside the cab. In addition, a handbrake release system has been designed to prevent the vehicle accidentally being driving away with the mast still fully extended.

This mast solution has already been fitted to 14 vehicles and there are further installations to follow shortly.
