Symposium to explore Concrete Roads for a Green World

Research findings from all around the world show that concrete roads have an important role to play in tackling the challenges of mobility and road infrastructure. From 25th  to 28th  June 2023, researchers, designers, contractors and project owners will meet for the fourteenth time at the International Symposium on Concrete Roads, which will be hosted in Krakow, Poland.

The event will be built around more than 80 papers on concrete pavements research, innovation and experience.

Environmental protection is becoming an increasingly important topic in road infrastructure construction. CO2 emissions are an essential topic to be taken into account in the construction, maintenance and operation of roads. That is why the motto of this 14th Symposium is “Concrete Roads for a Green World”.

The motto is reflected in the event’s programme, which, in addition to technology-related topics such as design, materials, construction and applications, gives much prominence to sustainability themes such as the European Green Deal, circular construction or economic and social aspects of concrete roads.

The Call for Abstracts was received enthusiastically, so the International Technical Programme Committee had to make choices. More than 80 papers will be presented over the three days of the Symposium, with subjects ranging from innovative pavement research to road construction and maintenance in practice in different parts of the world, including the first concrete motorway in South Africa, electrically conductive concrete designed in the United States, the challenges of Italian Alpine road pavements in low temperatures and noise analysis from South Korea.

The Symposium’s programme also includes four technical visits including local concrete roads and bicycle paths in Skawina and Tarnów, a section of the A1 Pyrzowice-Częstochowa concrete motorway now under construction, concrete tunnels on the express road S52 in Kraków and a visit to a demonstration of surface treatment techniques by the company OAT.

Concrete Roads 2023 is organized by the Polish Cement Association together with the European Concrete Paving Association (EUPAVE). Partners also include the World Road Association (PIARC), the International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP), the Polish Road Association and the City of Krakow. The symposium will be held under the auspices of the General Directorate for National Roads and Highways and the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure as well as the Polish Chamber of Road Construction.
