Parsons and Tekfen Engineering awarded contract for World’s Longest Suspension Bridge in Turkey

The Turkish Directorate of Highways KGM has awarded Parsons – in a joint venture with Tekfen Engineering—the engineering consultancy, construction support, and construction supervision/inspection services contract for the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge Malkara-Çanakkale Motorway. Parsons will also provide KGM staff with technology transfer in the design and construction of suspension bridges.

When completed, the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge will be the longest suspension bridge in the world. The new bridge will have a record setting 2,023 metre main span, which represents both the expected opening date of 2023, as well as the centennial of the Turkish Republic.

“We’re proud to be a part of this landmark project,” said Ken Serzan, Parsons Vice President and suspension bridge lead engineer on the project. “Our strong performance and reputation for delivering complex long-span bridges, combined with our technical strength worldwide, help us to achieve overall value for our customers.”

The $2.8 billion Çanakkale Bridge will be built 200 km southwest of Istanbul, spanning the Dardanelles Strait, which connects Lapseki District to the Gelibolu District (Gallipoli) bridge. The Çanakkale Straits separates Asia and Europe, and it connects the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. For centuries, the strait has been a confluence of cultures, and this impressive structure will contribute to more efficient trade between Turkey and Asia, as well as strong socioeconomic growth for the region—especially in Izmir.

The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge will also transform the region into a memorable tourist destination and allow people to easily access the historical city of Troy.
