Modular Carbon Capture with SLB Capturi

In a ground-breaking move towards reducing industrial emissions, global energy technology leader SLB has announced the commissioning of its first modular carbon capture plant.

Located at Twence’s waste-to-energy facility in Hengelo, Netherlands, this innovative project is poised to make waves across the industry. With a capacity to capture up to 100,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, the plant represents a significant step forward in sustainable energy practices.

The Just Catch™ Design

The carbon capture facility leverages SLB Capturi’s modular Just Catch™ design, a technological breakthrough that simplifies deployment while cutting costs. By minimising onsite installation and outfitting requirements, the Just Catch™ system sets itself apart from traditional carbon capture technologies. This makes it a practical, scalable solution for industries grappling with the challenge of decarbonisation.

Egil Fagerland, CEO of SLB Capturi, highlighted the importance of innovation in tackling global emissions: “We are extremely proud of our collaboration with Twence to bring online the first modular carbon capture plant at a waste-to-energy facility. As pressure mounts for industrials to reduce emissions and meet net-zero targets, access to affordable, effective carbon capture technologies is more important than ever.”

Supporting Horticulture and Food Industries

The CO2 captured by the Hengelo plant won’t just sit idle. Instead, it’ll be repurposed for use in horticulture and the food and beverage industries, providing a sustainable alternative to conventional carbon sources. By doing so, the plant aligns with the circular economy model, turning waste into a valuable resource.

Marc Kapteijn, CEO of Twence, emphasised the project’s sustainability credentials: “We are excited to see the successful completion of our new carbon capture plant. This highly innovative and sustainable project was safely realised by a motivated and committed team and through intensive collaboration with SLB Capturi. In the spring, we will supply the first CO2 to the greenhouse horticulture sector. We are convinced that this technology plays a crucial role in our ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and realise our sustainability ambitions.”

A Collaborative Effort with Global Impact

This achievement is a result of the synergy between SLB Capturi and Twence. SLB Capturi, a joint venture between SLB and Aker Carbon Capture, has been at the forefront of carbon removal solutions. Their expertise lies in designing modular systems that can be deployed rapidly and efficiently across various industries, including bioenergy, cement production, and waste-to-energy facilities.

Currently, SLB Capturi is delivering seven additional carbon capture plants, showcasing the scalability and reliability of its technologies. These projects collectively aim to make a dent in global CO2 emissions, accelerating the path to net-zero targets.

Why Modular Solutions Matter

Traditional carbon capture systems are often criticised for their complexity and cost. Modular solutions like Just Catch™, however, flip the script. Here’s why they’re a game-changer:

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Modular designs reduce the need for extensive onsite construction, slashing installation costs.
  • Scalability: These systems can be deployed across industries with varying carbon capture needs.
  • Speed of Deployment: Rapid installation minimises delays, ensuring industries can start reaping environmental benefits sooner.

With industries under increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices, modular systems offer a practical, effective pathway to compliance and beyond.

Pioneers in Energy Innovation

SLB’s global presence in over 100 countries underscores its commitment to driving energy innovation. Known for revolutionising oil and gas, the company has expanded its focus to digitalisation, decarbonisation, and next-generation energy systems.

By integrating SLB Capturi’s solutions, the company is making significant strides in accelerating the energy transition. This aligns with its broader mission of creating a balanced planet where economic growth doesn’t come at the expense of environmental health.

Scaling Sustainability

The success of the Hengelo plant serves as a model for future carbon capture initiatives. By combining advanced technology with a modular approach, SLB Capturi and Twence have demonstrated that large-scale CO2 reduction is not only possible but also economically viable.

As the first CO2 deliveries to the horticulture sector begin this spring, the impact of this project will become even more tangible. From reducing industrial emissions to supporting sustainable agriculture, the benefits of modular carbon capture are clear.

A Bright Future for Carbon Capture

The Hengelo plant marks a turning point in the quest for net-zero emissions. With SLB Capturi’s modular solutions leading the charge, industries worldwide have a viable pathway to meet their sustainability goals.

As more facilities adopt these technologies, the dream of a carbon-neutral future inches closer to reality.
