Esri UK partner Symology has been recognised in the global Esri Partner Network awards, for its achievements using cloud-based GIS, by winning an ArcGIS Adoption Award.

The awards took place during the virtual annual Esri Partner Conference and showcased the innovative work of 26 companies, selected from over 2,700 Esri partners worldwide.

A major player in highways infrastructure management, Symology’s solutions are used by over 200 local authorities and utility companies across the UK. The company received the award for the impressive new development of its cloud-based highways assets and street works management solution, Aurora. Esri’s cloud GIS was a key component, providing the underlying mapping to manage assets and street works notifications and enabling Symology to create a modern, web-based application, accessible on any device.

Designed for local authorities, utilities and contractors, Aurora is used to manage and maintain road networks and co-ordinate street works, minimising disruption to the public by digging-up the roads less often. The first customer of the new system was the Scottish Road Works Commissioner (SRWC) in 2020, with 3,000 staff using it to manage all local authority and utility roadworks across Scotland. The flexibility of the new solution has already proven invaluable, helping SRWC change its working practices during the Coronavirus pandemic.

This year, Symology is continuing to roll-out the Aurora solution to its customer base with plans to have over 30,000 users online within the next 3 years. Aurora is the successor to an on-premise solution that began its journey over 30 years ago, using ArcGIS Engine as the underlying mapping platform. A completely new development, Aurora will see all of its users migrated to the cloud, using Esri ArcGIS Enterprise running on Microsoft Azure.

“We see Aurora as the future of Highways management in the UK and we’re proud to have been recognised for its total modernisation using Esri’s cloud-based GIS. Creating an improved, future-proofed solution enables us to retain and expand on over 30 years of functionality, enhance our customers’ user experiences and provide us with a platform upon which we can grow as a company,” said Stuart Marshall, Sales and Marketing Manager at Symology. “ArcGIS Enterprise was clearly the best fit for the new solution while great teamwork with the Esri UK development team made the migration possible. The project is another significant milestone in our 10-year relationship as an Esri gold partner.”

“Symology’s Aurora project is a perfect demonstration of the power of the latest ArcGIS system, enabling our partners to deliver new ways of working,” said Heather Fletcher, Head of Partners and Alliances, Esri UK. “The cloud solution offers the flexibility users demand, while the map-driven user-interface is more intuitive, giving each user a high-end experience, letting them find and record assets and street works faster than before.”
