Bardem leads the way with new 25 ton Volvo Excavator

Bardem Ltd of Paisley has opted for a twenty-five tonne Volvo EC250E to be its flagship excavator for its growing portfolio of demolition contracts.

Following an initial introduction from SMT GB’s utility dealer for the Central Belt of Scotland – Rockbreakers UK – Operations Director, Willie Dunbar took the opportunity of visiting the ‘Live it. Dig it’ event back in March 2017 to try out the line-up of Volvo Construction Equipment products. “Brilliant! Great! Fantastic! were my immediate thoughts as I tried out both the EC220E and EC300E at the event,” enthuses Wille. “I found the machines very responsive, smooth to operate – couldn’t fault them at all.”

Within a week of the ‘Live it Dig it’ event, an order was placed by Bardem but it was for the model in the middle – the twenty-five tonne EC250E. “We wanted to go to a larger size of excavator and the new EC250E has become our flagship excavator within our mixed fleet of equipment,” says Managing Director, George Barclay. “So far we’ve been more than pleased with our decision to opt for a premium brand and we are delighted to be associated with owning and operating a Volvo,” he continues.

The EC250E is powered by a Volvo eight-cylinder engine developing 213hp. Operators can select the best work mode for the task at hand, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Modes include: I-idle, F-fine, G- general, H-heavy or P-power, with the machine automatically setting the appropriate engine speed for the work mode. Eco-mode is a new feature that works in G to H (or P) mode. Pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, while maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. Eco-mode provides better fuel-efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.

Specifically for Bardem Ltd, the new EC250E has been enhanced with heavy-duty belly plates, side-impact protection rails, guarding for the boom, bucket cylinders and a heavy-duty FOGS guard for the cab. In addition, the machine has been supplied with a mix-and-match quick coupler, heavy-duty extreme bucket and an X3 proportional rotation circuit to facilitate the use of rotating implements such as shears and sorting grapples.

Established in 2013, Bardem Ltd is a family-run business with George Barclay and Willie Dunbar as the company’s major shareholders, with both having sons working for the business as well. Both had worked together for many years before starting out on their own four and half years ago. The company has grown significantly in this short space of time currently having an annual turnover of in excess of £1.5m. “We’ve come a long way from just owning a micro digger and now have a compliment of 15 employees and a growing fleet of equipment with the new EC250E now as our flagship machine,” say George Barclay.
