VolkerFitzpatrick has been appointed by National Highways to deliver improvement works to junction 9 of the M3, a key motorway junction, which connects south Hampshire, with London, the midlands and the north.

More than 6,000 vehicles pass through junction 9 every hour during peak periods and the project will reduce congestion and improve journeys in the area.

The upgrade project includes the creation of four traffic lanes in each direction of the M3 as well as the provision of a same direction free-flow link between the M3 and A34. In addition, VolkerFitzpatrick will be constructing three new bridges, rearranging the main junction 9 roundabout and providing a number of other structures including new underpasses.

To encourage sustainable travel modes via the enhancement of pedestrian and cycling facilities, VolkerFitzpatrick is also delivering a number of walking and cycling improvements.

VolkerFitzpatrick is taking steps to minimise its environmental impact by reusing existing sub-base from the project, which will be tested before being relaid, and measures are in place to minimise any ecological impact on the surrounding area, including the South Downs National Park, and on the animal and plant species that live and grow nearby. New landscape features will also help blend the highway improvements into the surrounding areas.

The business will engage with nearby primary schools and the local community,  working with supply chain contractors from the surrounding area, providing employment opportunities over the course of the project and placing apprentices and trainees on site.

Deon Scholtz, highways director for VolkerFitzpatrick, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to deliver the M3, junction 9 upgrade project, continuing our collaboration with National Highways. The regional approach will allow us to deliver our in-house highways expertise in a way which most benefits the communities in which we work.”

Prior to commencement, VolkerFitzpatrick has supported National Highways at public information events, welcoming more than 400 people over a two-day period. The team was able to talk through the plans for the project and answer any questions from members of the public.

The M3, junction 9 upgrade project is part of National Highways’ £8.7 billion Regional Delivery Partnership, which has seen the VolkerFitzpatrick team deliver works to improve roads and infrastructure in the South East. The project is due to start on site in early 2025.
