Tackling Global Water Insecurity With Topcon and Wine to Water

In a world where millions lack access to clean drinking water, there are inspiring stories of companies stepping up to make a difference.

Topcon Positioning Systems, an industry leader in precision measurement technologies, recently took a bold step towards tackling global water insecurity. Teaming up with the non-profit Wine to Water (WTW), Topcon hosted an event that combined its commitment to sustainability with hands-on community engagement.

The event, held during Topcon’s Technical Xperience, was more than just an exercise in corporate social responsibility (CSR); it was a showcase of how global corporations can truly make a difference.

A Global Need for Clean Water

According to the World Health Organization, over 2 billion people worldwide struggle with water insecurity — that is, lacking consistent access to clean and safe drinking water. This isn’t merely an inconvenience; it’s a matter of life and death. Waterborne diseases, which stem from contaminated sources, claim the lives of over 400,000 children each year. Yet, despite the overwhelming statistics, efforts like those of Wine to Water bring hope, aiming to provide sustainable solutions to this global crisis.

Topcon’s collaboration with Wine to Water came about after Mike Gomes, Vice President of Sustainability and Global CSR at Topcon, was deeply moved by a presentation from WTW founder Doc Hendley. Gomes remarked: “Doc’s talk on water insecurity hit very close to home for us. At Topcon, we’ve always believed in using our resources for work that truly matters.”

Making a Tangible Impact

The highlight of the collaboration was the Filter Build® event, where attendees of the Topcon Technical Xperience came together to assemble 200 water filter kits. This hands-on session was attended by Topcon distributors from various regions, including North America, Latin America, and Australia. The filters built during this session are expected to provide clean water to an estimated 2,000 people for up to 10 years.

Tim Cox, Jr., WTW’s Vice President of Product and Innovations, praised Topcon’s efforts, saying: “Topcon’s commitment to sustainable practices and genuine CSR initiatives is truly commendable. This filter build is just one impactful example of their dedication.”

These filter kits are no ordinary devices. Engineered to be simple yet effective, they’re designed to remove impurities and pathogens from water sources, making them an ideal solution for underserved communities around the world. Each filter can turn contaminated water into safe, drinkable water, making a substantial difference in areas where clean water is a luxury.

Topcon’s Commitment to Global Sustainability

Topcon, founded 92 years ago, has long been recognised for its innovations in geospatial, construction, and agricultural technology. But beyond its business ventures, the company has always prioritised giving back to the community. The company’s motto: “For Work That Matters,” resonates deeply with its sustainability goals.

Ron Oberlander, Vice President of Topcon Global Professional Services, emphasised that the idea of incorporating charitable events into their annual Technical Xperience wasn’t a one-off. “Last year’s Habitat for Humanity Playhouse Build was such a hit that we knew we had to do something meaningful again this year. This time, however, we wanted to make a broader, global impact,” he explained.

The choice of partnering with Wine to Water was strategic. As a non-profit dedicated to addressing water insecurity, WTW has already reached over 2.1 million people in 55 countries, providing clean water solutions through tailored water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives. By aligning with WTW, Topcon ensures its efforts have a lasting impact far beyond the initial event.

The Broader Impact of Water Security

Water security is about much more than quenching thirst. It impacts health, education, economic development, and gender equality. WTW’s projects go beyond simply delivering water filters; they empower communities by training local leaders, promoting women’s involvement, and enhancing healthcare outcomes.

In regions like Nepal, the Dominican Republic, the Amazon, and Tanzania, WTW’s teams have implemented customised water systems that serve entire communities. During emergencies, WTW’s disaster response units are always ready to mobilise, ensuring that clean water reaches those who need it most.

The Future of Corporate Social Responsibility

Topcon’s partnership with WTW serves as a blueprint for other companies looking to make a meaningful impact. By going beyond mere financial donations and opting for hands-on involvement, Topcon has shown that businesses can play a pivotal role in addressing global challenges.

While many companies pay lip service to sustainability, Topcon walks the walk. As Mike Gomes put it: “Our focus on sustainability isn’t just about the environment — it’s about contributing to the well-being of communities worldwide.”

Tim Cox, Jr. echoed this sentiment, noting: “When corporations like Topcon get involved, it sets a powerful precedent. It shows that businesses don’t have to choose between profitability and making a positive social impact.”

A Step Towards a Sustainable Tomorrow

The Filter Build® event is a testament to what’s possible when corporations step up to the plate.

By joining hands with non-profits like Wine to Water, Topcon is making strides toward a future where clean drinking water is a right, not a privilege. It’s a powerful reminder that, with collective effort, even the most pressing global challenges can be tackled.
