Work on the first phase of the US$ 2.7 Billion 900-kilometre dual carriageway Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu Highway Project is expected to commence this month with the first phase from Beitbridge to Harare valued at US$ 984 Million.

The Beitbridge-Chirundu Highway Project was awarded to China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC), and is the largest ongoing construction project in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwean contractors have said that they had agreed with the government to ensure that local contractors receive a 40% share of the first phase of the project, but nothing has been implemented to date. The local contractors fear that the Chinese contractor working on the project may side-line them.

This 40% share of the first phase of the project, valued at about US$400 Million has caused excitement with local contractors vying for a part of the 40% share.
