Steel bridge expert John Yadlosky honoured with AISC Lifetime Achievement Award

HDR’s John Yadlosky has been honoured with the American Institute of Steel Construction’s 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award.

The prestigious award recognizes individuals who have provided outstanding service to the structural steel industry and to AISC for a sustained period of time.

“Being honoured by AISC means a great deal to me on more than one level,” said Yadlosky, HDR’s bridges and structures operations director. “Professionally, it’s recognition from an organization that has done so much to advance and innovate steel bridge construction. Personally, it is rewarding to reflect on how my career has developed parallel to my passions in the industry, and the many amazing people and projects I’ve been able to work with throughout.”

With four decades of experience in the transportation industry, Yadlosky facilitates the coordination and collaboration of more than 700 HDR bridge specialists around the world. He began his bridge career with the rehabilitation designs of Pittsburgh’s Elizabeth and McKees Rocks steel truss bridges in the 1980s. He’s since contributed to the design and planning of many highway, railroad, and transit steel structures, such as the bridges of the I-4 Ultimate project in Orlando, Florida.

Yadlosky is a respected authority on steel bridge design and construction and he has helped develop many of the guides and specifications published by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials/National Steel Bridge Alliance Steel Bridge Collaboration. In fact, Yadlosky was one of the early participants at the beginning of the AASHTO/NSBA Steel Bridge Collaboration, helping to guide it during its inception.

“John has long been at the forefront of innovative bridge design, and his level of expertise and skilful leadership have shaped our award-winning Bridges & Structures practice,” said Global Bridges & Structures Director Manuel Carballo. “Within HDR, John mentors and shares his knowledge freely. He is more than worthy of this well-deserved, amazing accomplishment.”

This year’s Annual Steel Conference, where Yadlosky was to receive the award, was moved to a virtual platform and condensed. Instead, to celebrate the award, he was interviewed by AISC.
