Powering Plantation Success in Sorong with 25 Volvo EC210 Excavators

Tunas Jaya Persada, one of Indonesia’s most forward-looking contractors, has made waves in the construction and plantation sectors by deploying a formidable fleet of 25 Volvo New Generation EC210 excavators in Sorong, West Papua. This ambitious move is part of a large-scale plantation development, with the machines taking the lead in clearing dense jungle and preparing soil across remote, rugged terrain.

The excavators, supplied by PT Indotruck Utama (ITU), the official Volvo Construction Equipment dealer in Indonesia, are doing more than just digging dirt. They’re reshaping the productivity curve for remote projects, slashing fuel consumption and raising efficiency where every drop of diesel and every minute of uptime counts.

“We chose the New Generation EC210 Excavator because it’s dependable, fuel-efficient, and easy to maintain, exactly what we need for a long-term project in a remote area” said Mr Ahong, Owner of Tunas Jaya Persada. “The performance of the machines, combined with the excellent after-sales support from PT Indotruck Utama, has enabled us to maintain productivity and stay on schedule. Based on this success, we have placed an order for an additional 40 units to support the next phase of the project.”

Machines built for unforgiving terrain

The EC210 might look like just another excavator, but its engineering says otherwise. Designed to thrive in harsh environments, the machine features Volvo’s advanced hydraulic system and robust components tailored for relentless, heavy-duty operation. In the steamy, rain-soaked climate of Papua, reliability is not optional – it’s essential.

Beyond brute strength, these excavators also pack a punch in precision. Their ergonomic controls allow operators to dig, lift and manoeuvre with greater finesse, which becomes especially important when working in environmentally sensitive areas where accuracy matters.

Operator comfort

In the heart of the jungle, where isolation and long shifts are par for the course, operator wellbeing can make or break a project. Fortunately, the New Generation EC210s offer more than mechanical muscle. Inside the cab, it’s a different world – air-conditioned, spacious, and thoughtfully designed to reduce fatigue.

Suspension seating, intuitive control layouts and reduced cab vibration contribute to a smoother experience, keeping operators sharp and focused. And let’s face it: a comfortable operator is a productive one.

Scaling up sustainably

This investment isn’t just about speed and scale – it’s about sustainability, too. The EC210s are powered by Volvo’s fuel-efficient engines, which burn cleaner and cut emissions without sacrificing performance. It’s a welcome bonus for a company with an eye on long-term environmental stewardship.

Add to that simplified maintenance and fewer unplanned downtimes, and you’ve got a machine that helps reduce the project’s carbon and cost footprints in one fell swoop.

Raven Chua, Head of Market West for Region Asia at Volvo CE, added: “Tunas Jaya Persada’s success with the New Generation EC210 Excavators highlights the machine’s ability to deliver consistent results in challenging environments. We’re proud to support this important project in partnership with PT Indotruck Utama.”

Building on momentum

The initial 25-machine deployment marks just the beginning. With an order for 40 more EC210s already in motion, Tunas Jaya Persada is gearing up for the next stage of the project, underpinned by confidence in both the equipment and its supplier.

This large-scale rollout not only speaks to the trust placed in Volvo’s engineering but also points to a broader shift within Indonesia’s infrastructure development: a move towards modern, efficient and environmentally aware machinery.

Why Sorong matters

Sorong is no easy location for construction work. Tucked away in Indonesia’s easternmost province, the city is surrounded by untamed forests and mountainous landscapes that test both man and machine. For contractors, this means logistical hurdles, access issues, and unpredictable weather that can turn a regular job into a gruelling slog.

Having machines that can handle the pressure without constant downtime is crucial. And that’s exactly where the EC210s earn their keep.

A partnership that delivers

The close collaboration between Tunas Jaya Persada and PT Indotruck Utama has been instrumental in the project’s early success. With rapid after-sales service, expert technical support, and a shared commitment to keeping the machines running smoothly, the partnership offers a model for others in the industry to emulate.

From delivering the machines to providing ongoing maintenance training and spare parts logistics, ITU has kept pace with the project’s demanding tempo.

Looking to the future

With dozens more machines on the way and momentum building on site, this Sorong plantation project is more than a case study in earthmoving – it’s a blueprint for scalable, sustainable development in emerging regions. Tunas Jaya Persada is not only reshaping the landscape but redefining how major projects are executed in remote areas.

Their approach combines investment in top-tier machinery with a pragmatic focus on uptime, environmental responsibility, and workforce wellbeing – a trifecta that bodes well for Indonesia’s broader ambitions in agriculture and infrastructure.

Driving transformation, one excavator at a time

As this fleet of EC210s roars into action, the message is clear: modern construction isn’t just about building faster. It’s about building smarter, cleaner, and more sustainably. And in the thick of Sorong’s wilderness, a new standard is being set – one excavator at a time.
