Chinese truck OEM, Shandong Pengxiang Auto, has specified Allison’s 4800 Off Road Series™ (ORS) fully automatic transmission for its latest wide-body mining dump (WBMD) truck.

Thirty units of the 90-ton model have been delivered to Sinohydro Bureau, an engineering and construction services company for hydraulic, hydropower, road, dam, harbour, bridge, airport and other civil infrastructure projects. Another 20 WBMD trucks, with 96-ton GVW, have been delivered to a mining site in Inner Mongolia.

The WBMD is a heavy-duty, off-highway truck used for transporting rocks and ores in open-pit mines. The WBMD truck has a higher loading capacity than standard dump trucks and is designed to take on undulating routes with potholes, obstacles, slopes and curves.

Both Pengxiang WBMD models feature a 382.4 kW diesel engine (YC6K1352-50) rated at 2402 Nm torque coupled to an Allison 4800 ORS fully automatic transmission with Power Take-Off (PTO) and a retarder.

Designed for the large load haul dumpers, all-terrain mobile cranes, concrete mixers and construction specialty trucks, the Allison 4800 Off Road Series offers increased productivity, improved reliability and reduced operating costs for heavy-duty, high-power applications. The hydraulic torque converter provides smooth and constant power to the wheels, meaning trucks can easily manoeuvre through loose gravel or sand. The retarder reduces brake usage by providing auxiliary braking on downgrades, giving precision control on tough terrain, even when the truck is fully loaded, on inclines and at low speeds.

With Allison’s FuelSense® 2.0 software packages, fuel economy and performance is balanced, as its learning algorithm determines optimum shift patterns based on duty cycle and GVW status.

To increase productivity and to address the heavy-duty truck driver shortage in mining, Shandong Pengxiang Auto has begun developing a driverless version of the WBMD truck, also equipped with the Allison 4800 ORS. A prototype is currently being tested.
