RSP UK Celebrates 10 Years of Specialist Excavation Equipment

RSP UK Suction Excavators has marked its tenth anniversary with the retirement of industry veteran Nigel Gardener and a change in board involvement for Jens Graber, a founding member of the German RSP Group. The milestone brings a period of transition for the Bedfordshire-based specialist machinery supplier, which was established in 2016 to develop the RSP business in the British market.

The company celebrated on 26 September 2026 at The Belfry in Sutton Coldfield, bringing together approximately 250 customers, suppliers, employees and representatives from RSP Germany. Alongside recognising the people who helped establish the business, the evening raised £15,500 for the Henry Allen Trust, a charity supported by RSP UK during its anniversary year.

Over the past decade, RSP UK has developed from a machinery supply operation into a business providing equipment sales, servicing, replacement parts and specialist training. Its portfolio includes RSP suction excavators, Amphitec industrial vacuum equipment and BROCK road sweepers, serving customers involved in utility installation, construction, infrastructure maintenance and specialist excavation.

Briefing

  • RSP UK celebrated its tenth anniversary on 26 September 2026, following its establishment in 2016.

  • The company supplies RSP, Amphitec and BROCK equipment, supported by servicing, parts and accredited operator training.
  • Around 250 guests attended the anniversary celebration, which raised £15,500 for the Henry Allen Trust.

Building a Specialist Machinery Business

RSP UK’s origins lie in a relationship with its German parent group that predates the British company’s formation by approximately a decade. What began as a commercial association developed into a dedicated UK operation in 2016, providing a local base for machinery sales and customer support.

The company’s equipment portfolio covers several specialist applications. RSP suction excavators are used to remove soil, aggregates and other suitable materials through high-velocity airflow, while Amphitec industrial vacuum equipment is designed for demanding material recovery and handling operations. BROCK road sweepers extend the offering into highway cleaning and maintenance, giving the business a presence in activities beyond excavation.

Suction excavation has become an established option for contractors working around buried utilities, where conventional excavator buckets can present a risk to cables, pipelines and other underground assets. The machines draw loosened material through a suction hose into an onboard collection container, allowing operators to expose services and remove material with greater control. Performance depends on ground conditions, the nature of the material and the techniques used to loosen it before removal.

Applications extend beyond utility installation to railway infrastructure, industrial facilities, restricted-access construction sites and maintenance work where selective excavation is preferable to conventional bulk earthmoving. The technique can reduce certain risks associated with mechanical digging, although it still requires careful planning and competent operation.

The UK’s Health and Safety Executive addresses underground service risks in its HSG47 guidance, which places particular emphasis on planning the work, locating buried services and adopting safe excavation practices. Suction excavation can support those procedures, but it does not replace the need for reliable utility information, appropriate site controls or safe working methods.

Training and Equipment Support

Alongside machinery sales, RSP UK has invested in technical support and operator training, developing a dedicated training centre at its Bedfordshire base. The facility offers training associated with the Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR), the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs).

Its training provision includes the CPCS A78 Vacuum Excavator Operator programme, covering machine operation, safety procedures, routine maintenance and excavation techniques. Practical instruction forms part of the training, with courses also available at customer locations where appropriate. In 2024, RSP UK announced that it had received approval to deliver Level 2 NVQ training in Plant Operations, extending its involvement in formal operator qualifications.

The requirements of suction excavation differ from those of conventional earthmoving. Operators must understand airflow, material behaviour, hose handling, ground conditions and the precautions necessary when working near buried services. The choice of excavation tools and operating techniques can affect both productivity and the condition of the infrastructure being exposed.

RSP UK’s service and parts operations support machinery throughout its working life, with maintenance and technical assistance forming part of its relationship with customers. For equipment deployed on utility and infrastructure contracts, availability can be particularly important where excavation activities are coordinated with other site operations or restricted working windows.

Recognising Nigel Gardener’s Career

One of the principal figures honoured during the anniversary was Nigel Gardener, who retires after more than 50 years in heavy plant and trenchless technology. He joined RSP UK as Business Support Manager when the company was founded in 2016, bringing extensive experience of specialist construction machinery and customer support.

Earlier in his career, Gardener was involved in introducing trenchless technologies to international markets, working in a field that developed alternatives to conventional open-cut construction for installing, repairing and rehabilitating underground infrastructure. The methods and equipment have evolved considerably over the intervening decades, particularly as utilities and contractors have sought ways to manage work in increasingly congested underground environments.

His contribution has been recognised with two Lifetime Achievement Awards. In September 2026, he received the honour from Family Business United, five years after being presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the UK Society for Trenchless Technology.

Nigel’s son, RSP UK director Lloyd Gardener, paid tribute to his father’s contribution to the business and the experience he brought to its early development: “My Dad, Nigel, has worked in this industry for more than fifty years, and he has given RSP UK his time, experience, advice, patience and support. He helped us build this business into what it is today, and we are incredibly proud of him and deeply grateful for everything he has done.”

Changes to the UK Board

The anniversary also recognised Jens Graber, a founding member of RSP Germany who is stepping back from his position on the RSP UK board. Graber has been involved with the British operation since its establishment, supporting the relationship between the German manufacturing group and its UK business.

That relationship stretches back twenty years, according to Lloyd Gardener, and has continued through the formation and expansion of RSP UK. The arrangement has given the British operation a direct connection to the specialist machinery, engineering knowledge and manufacturer support available within the wider RSP Group.

“Our relationship with RSP goes back twenty years, and those working relationships have become genuine friendships. As Jens steps back from the board, we thank him for the groundwork he laid in the UK, and for his hard work, fairness and friendship. We admire him enormously.”

RSP UK has not announced any changes to its operational structure or commercial strategy in connection with the anniversary. The business continues to operate across equipment supply, aftersales support and specialist training.

Supporting the Henry Allen Trust

The anniversary celebrations also provided an opportunity to support the Henry Allen Trust, a Milton Keynes-based charity established in memory of Henry Allen, who died aged four.

Henry had a particular affection for road sweepers, a connection that prompted RSP UK to dedicate a BROCK sweeper to his memory. The vehicle, carrying Henry’s image and the Trust’s livery, was displayed outside The Belfry during the event, welcoming guests as they arrived.

The evening was hosted by television presenter and magician Ben Hanlin, who introduced a film about the Trust and its work. Donations from guests raised £15,500, and RSP UK intends to make the specially dedicated road sweeper available to the industry to support further fundraising activities.

RSP UK director Charlie Gardener thanked customers, employees, suppliers and representatives of the German group for their contribution to the company’s first decade, while acknowledging the significance of the charity fundraising.

“Ten years ago we set out to build something special, and standing in that room with our customers, our team and our RSP family was an incredibly proud moment,” he said. “The machines may be what brought us together, but it is the relationships that have made the last ten years so special. Raising £15,500 for the Henry Allen Trust made the night mean even more, and we would like to thank everyone who gave so generously.”
