Liebherr’s High-Performance Timber Handling Machines Steal the Show at LIGNA 2025

LIGNA 2025 is shaping up to be a landmark event for the timber and forestry sector, and Liebherr is set to take centre stage with a dynamic showcase of machinery tailor-made for the wood processing industry.

From 26 to 30 May, the world-renowned equipment manufacturer will display its latest innovations on a sprawling 475 m² stand in the outdoor area of Hanover’s trade fair grounds (Corner 7, Stand L44). This year, it’s not just about machines; it’s about showcasing capability, efficiency, and a touch of competitive sport.

The centrepieces of Liebherr’s exhibition include the L 580 XPower wheel loader, the agile LH 26 M Timber Litronic material handler, and the robust T 60-9s telescopic handler. As if the cutting-edge technology weren’t enough, the stand will also play host to jaw-dropping daily demonstrations by STIHL TIMBERSPORTS®, adding a high-octane flair to the already engaging exhibit.

Designed for the demands of timber handling

Handling wood isn’t just a job – it’s a discipline that demands power, finesse, and machinery that can perform under pressure. Liebherr understands the challenges faced by timber yards, sawmills, and forestry operators. Their line-up at LIGNA reflects this expertise with purpose-built solutions that promise precision, efficiency, and rugged durability.

From lifting logs to loading woodchips, Liebherr’s machines are engineered for rapid cycles and high payloads without compromising manoeuvrability. Whether it’s navigating narrow paths or operating on uneven ground, these machines tick all the right boxes for modern timber operations.

A heavyweight with a light footprint

The L 580 XPower wheel loader isn’t just big on capacity – it’s smart about it. As the second largest model in the Liebherr loader range, this machine boasts industrial kinematics paired with a high-tipping bucket, making it a perfect match for wood processing tasks like shifting bark, sawdust, or bulky biomass.

Fuel efficiency is at the heart of the XPower series. A standard power-split travel drive balances maximum performance with minimal consumption, enabling operators to work harder without burning through the budget.

Safety hasn’t taken a back seat either. Liebherr’s integrated assistance systems, such as the active rear-view person detection, help reduce onsite incidents. “The system uses visual and acoustic warnings to alert operators to hazards behind the machine, automatically distinguishing between people and objects,” notes a company spokesperson. It’s this kind of tech-forward thinking that helps wood processors boost productivity without compromising on safety.

The LH 26 M Timber Litronic

Sawmills and timber yards often deal with tight corners and narrow lanes – not exactly ideal for most heavy equipment. That’s where the LH 26 M Timber comes into its own. This compact yet powerful machine is purpose-built for confined spaces and shines when it comes to agility and fuel efficiency.

With an operating mass between 23,500 and 26,000 kg, the LH 26 M packs serious punch without guzzling fuel. Its combination with a round timber trailer and GMH 40 wood grab creates a versatile timber logistics solution that excels over long haul distances. Towing up to 60 tonnes? Not a problem.

The wide 3.00 m undercarriage and rear support blade deliver stability during loading, meaning operators can handle more per cycle. “It’s not just about strength; it’s about stability and smart design,” explains a Liebherr engineer. The support blade can even double as a clearing tool, helping to maintain safe, obstacle-free yards.

Liebherr T 60-9s telescopic handler

If there’s one machine in the Liebherr stable that can wear many hats, it’s the T 60-9s telescopic handler. Built for multitasking in unpredictable environments, this model delivers power, accuracy, and impressive reach.

Capable of lifting six-tonne loads and extending up to nine metres, the T 60-9s combines brute force with surgical precision. Add in its all-wheel drive, and it becomes a go-anywhere, do-anything piece of kit.

Manoeuvrability is key in busy timber environments. The T 60-9s features a large steering angle and extended wheelbase, which offer tight turning without compromising on lifting strength.

“Visibility is another standout,” says a Liebherr specialist: “The continuous windscreen allows operators to clearly see upwards – critical for lifting and stacking safely.” The optional fine control feature means hydraulic settings can be tuned to fit specific jobs, from full power to delicate adjustments.

STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® takes the stage

Adding a splash of adrenaline to Liebherr’s technical line-up is STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® athlete Florian Hägele. Known for his prowess with chainsaws and the legendary two-metre pull saw, Hägele will perform four daily shows that blend skill, speed, and sheer grit.

Live demonstrations of the Stock Saw and Single Buck disciplines will bring the buzz of competition to the Liebherr stand, drawing in crowds and spotlighting the raw energy of timber sports. “We want to connect the precision and power of our machines with the athleticism and passion of real timber professionals,” says Liebherr’s event coordinator.

And it’s not just for spectators. Between shows, visitors can roll up their sleeves and try their hand at cutting their own souvenir slice from a log – a fun, interactive way to leave the stand with more than just a brochure.

A deeper look at sustainable timber handling

While the LIGNA spotlight shines brightly on performance and precision, Liebherr hasn’t forgotten the sustainability angle. The brand’s focus on reducing fuel consumption, improving emissions profiles, and integrating long-lasting components helps align its equipment with the sector’s broader environmental goals.

Liebherr machines also support alternative fuels and biodiesel, where infrastructure permits, further cementing the company’s commitment to sustainable industrial solutions. As the timber industry continues to innovate around circular economies and renewable materials, equipment like Liebherr’s offers critical infrastructure support.

More than just a trade fair

With a mix of cutting-edge tech, jaw-dropping displays, and hands-on experiences, Liebherr’s LIGNA 2025 appearance promises to be a memorable one. The timber and forestry industry is evolving fast, and Liebherr is clearly committed to being a driving force in that transformation.

From high-efficiency machines to next-level operator safety and thrilling live entertainment, there’s plenty to get excited about. Whether you’re a sawmill operator, forestry contractor, or just a machinery enthusiast, the Liebherr stand is well worth a visit.
