NM Group begins final phase of million pound flooding project in East Yorkshire

NM Group (North Midland Construction Plc) has announced the final phase of the far-reaching Anlaby and East Ella Flood Alleviation Scheme (AEEFAS) has commenced and is expected to run until mid-2020. When complete, the scheme will reduce the risk of flooding for thousands of residents and businesses in the Hull and Haltemprice areas.

Developed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council in partnership with Hull City Council, and the Environment Agency, AEEFAS is designed to reduce the risk of flooding to homes, businesses and regional transport links in the area from a reoccurrence of the devastating flooding that occurred there in 2007, and which affected approximately 11,000 local properties and businesses in Hull and Haltemprice. The scheme is joint funded through Flood Defence Grant in Aid, administered by the Environment Agency and the Local Growth Fund provided by The Humber Local Enterprise Partnership.

NM Group says the final phase of this project, developed using a cutting edge integrated catchment model, will see the creation of a flow entry structure at Kerry Pit near Westella Valley and a large 115,000 cubic metre flood storage Lagoon located on the site of the old Sydney Smith School in Anlaby. Connecting these will be a new 1.8-metre-wide tunnelled storm culvert that will divert water away from residential areas before reconnecting with the existing Western Drain at Marr Bridge.

Geoff Poyzer, Managing Director of NM Group’s Highways Division, said: “I am delighted we have been awarded the Anlaby and East Ella project, which will further enhance the excellent relationship with our clients, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and their partners Hull City Council and the Environment Agency.”

Reflecting the scale of the project, NM Group says this final phase will include construction of numerous flow control and outfall structures, as well as a new watercourse, maintenance access roads, highway drainage headwalls and an energy dissipation unit. Furthermore, with existing drain crossings also having been identified as a contributing factor to flooding in the Anlaby and East Ella area, NM Group is also responsible for reconstructing several drain crossings, which will significantly reduce out-of-bank and property flooding in the area.

As part of the extensive project, there are also plans for to provide recreational and amenity facilities for local residents on the new Tranby Lagoon site on First Lane in Anlaby. Chris Davis, Framework Manager, Highways Division “This is an extensive and important project; one that when complete will better protect local residents and businesses from the often-devastating effects of flooding.”
