Stevens Equipment Rental has taken delivery of its 1000th new machine, and the choice of asset says more about the direction of the UK plant market than the milestone itself. The Cumbrian rental business, trading for more than 50 years and formerly known as Peter Stevens Dumptruck Hire, has become the first UK company to put a Cat 980 medium wheel loader into service with Caterpillar’s new automatic emergency braking function.
Two 30.9 tonne machines were supplied by Finning UK & Ireland in commemorative livery, taking the fleet count to 1000 and 1001, and both carry a technology package that no longer merely warns the operator about a hazard. It intervenes.
