Banjul International Airport Expansion Project Opens for Bids
The Government of The Gambia, through the Ministry of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure (MOTWI) and the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), has officially opened the bidding process for one of the country’s most ambitious infrastructure projects to date.
This project involves the construction of a brand-new passenger terminal and associated ancillary facilities at Banjul International Airport.
Responding to Growing Air Traffic Demand
The Banjul International Airport, often referred to locally as Yundum International Airport, is The Gambia’s primary international gateway. Over recent years, it has witnessed a steady increase in passenger numbers and aircraft movements, resulting in congestion issues across its terminal and aircraft apron areas.
Recognising these capacity constraints, the Government has prioritised the construction of a new terminal to accommodate rising demand. The goal is not only to ease congestion but also to bring the airport up to par with international aviation standards, both in terms of safety and security.
Scope of the Project
The expansion project is designed to:
- Develop a new, modern terminal building
- Rehabilitate and expand aircraft apron areas
- Upgrade runway infrastructure
- Improve passenger processing and baggage handling systems
- Enhance security and customs facilities
- Build supporting utility and operational infrastructure
This comprehensive development aims to future-proof Banjul International Airport and maintain its competitive edge among regional airports in West Africa.
Why This Project Matters
“The Government of The Gambia considered the need for the Construction of a new Airport Terminal and related ancillary facilities at the Banjul International Airport, in order to provide adequate facilities and infrastructure aimed at not only meeting international safety and security standards but also improve operational efficiency and hold its competitive position with other regional international airports.”
This statement highlights the broader economic and strategic goals behind the project. By improving airport capacity and service levels, The Gambia hopes to:
- Strengthen its appeal to international airlines
- Increase tourism inflows
- Facilitate trade and cargo operations
- Improve the overall passenger experience
Public-Private Partnership Opportunity
The project is being promoted under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project finance framework. This allows for the involvement of private investors who will be responsible for the design, construction, financing, operation, maintenance, and eventual transfer of the airport facilities.
This PPP model is part of The Gambia’s wider strategy to attract private sector expertise and capital into its infrastructure development efforts. The structure follows a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Maintain, and Transfer (DBFOMT) model, which spreads the project risk and rewards across both public and private partners.

Aligning with Regional Aviation Trends
Across West Africa, several countries have ramped up their airport development programmes. Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport and Senegal’s Blaise Diagne International Airport are examples of modern aviation hubs driving regional connectivity.
By expanding Banjul International Airport, The Gambia is positioning itself to compete more effectively in this rapidly evolving landscape. Enhanced airport infrastructure will enable the country to attract more long-haul carriers and regional airlines, boosting both passenger and cargo traffic.
Commitment to Sustainable and Efficient Infrastructure
The Government has stressed that the project will adhere to international environmental and operational standards. Energy-efficient systems, waste management solutions, and passenger-friendly designs are expected to be part of the project brief.
This aligns with The Gambia’s broader sustainability agenda, which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of major infrastructure projects while delivering economic benefits.
The Runway Ahead
As the tender process moves forward, industry stakeholders will be watching closely. The project presents significant opportunities not only for construction and aviation firms but also for investors seeking long-term returns in emerging markets.
By delivering a modern, world-class airport facility, The Gambia aims to unlock new economic potential, enhance international connectivity, and set a new benchmark for infrastructure development in the region.
A New Era for Gambian Aviation
The expansion of Banjul International Airport marks a pivotal moment in The Gambia’s infrastructure journey. By inviting private sector participation and embracing international best practices, the country is taking a bold step toward transforming its air transport sector.
The successful delivery of this project will not only boost The Gambia’s tourism and trade sectors but also serve as a model for other nations looking to modernise their aviation infrastructure through strategic public-private partnerships.
