In a bold move that signals Toyota’s commitment to innovation, the automaker unveiled the sixth-generation RAV4 at its world premiere in Tokyo on May 21, 2025.
This launch not only introduces a refreshed design and enhanced performance but also marks the debut of Toyota’s in-house developed Arene software platform, positioning the RAV4 at the forefront of the software-defined vehicle (SDV) revolution.

Developed by Woven by Toyota, Arene is a comprehensive software platform designed to enable over-the-air updates, advanced driver assistance systems, and a more personalised driving experience. This move aligns Toyota with industry leaders like Tesla and Chinese EV manufacturers, who have long emphasised software in their vehicle ecosystems.
“RAV4 marks the start of our journey in building software-defined vehicles” said Simon Humphries, Chief Branding Officer at Toyota, during the world premiere. “With Arene, we’re not just enhancing the driving experience; we’re laying the groundwork for a future where our vehicles continuously evolve with our customers’ needs.”
Arene’s capabilities extend beyond infotainment and safety features. It enables the RAV4 to collect and analyse driving data, facilitating continuous improvements and paving the way for autonomous driving technologies. This data-driven approach ensures that the RAV4 remains adaptable and responsive to the ever-changing demands of modern mobility.
The World’s Most Efficient PHEV System
Toyota’s commitment to electrification is evident in the new RAV4’s powertrain options. The plug-in hybrid variant boasts an impressive all-electric range of up to 150 kilometres (93 miles) under Japan’s test cycle, a significant increase from the previous model’s 95 kilometres. This enhancement is attributed to a larger battery capacity and the introduction of DC fast-charging capabilities, allowing the battery to reach 80% charge in approximately 30 minutes.
With a combined range exceeding 1,350 kilometres (839 miles), the RAV4 PHEV offers a compelling alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles, particularly in markets where long-distance travel is common. This extended range, coupled with zero-emission driving capabilities, positions the RAV4 as a leader in sustainable mobility solutions.

The sixth-generation RAV4 introduces three distinct grades—CORE, ADVENTURE, and GR SPORT—each tailored to different driving preferences. The ADVENTURE grade emphasises off-road capabilities with features like larger wheels and a multi-terrain monitor, while the GR SPORT variant, developed by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing team, offers a sportier aesthetic and enhanced performance.
Underpinning these models is the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, which provides a lower centre of gravity and increased body rigidity. These structural improvements contribute to better handling, stability, and overall driving dynamics, ensuring that the RAV4 delivers a confident and engaging driving experience across various terrains.
