Perth based civil engineering and plant contractors I & H Brown has taken delivery of a thirty tonne Volvo EC300E for its extensive plant fleet, which has been pledged to support health workers by raising money for the NHS Charities Together COVID-19 Urgent Appeal.

The EC300E has gone to work on a major project near Edinburgh for I & H Brown’s client – Winchburgh Developments. I & H Brown will donate all profits arising from the deployment of the machine onsite over the coming twelve months to the charity, with that amount being matched equally by Winchburgh Developments. The machine has also been christened ‘The Lockdown Ranger’ by a local school pupil from Winchburgh.

Another company located in Perth, namely Write On Sign & Display, who designed and applied the graphics free of charge, has wrapped the machine to show this very generous initiative.

I & H Brown are no strangers to owning and operating Volvo Construction Equipment products, having an extensive fleet of Volvo articulated haulers. The company also run Volvo wheeled excavators, but this is the first thirty tonne crawler excavator sporting Volvo branding to join its plant fleet.

“Good and consistent aftersales support that Volvo, and now SMT GB, has provided over the years is an important factor for us in our purchasing criteria, and is one of the main reasons for opting for this particular machine,” comments Plant Director Robert Brown.

A six-cylinder Stage V compliant Volvo engine, developing 243hp, is ideally matched to the EC300E automatic sensing mode hydraulic system. Volvo’s unique ECO mode contributes to significant fuel savings, without any loss of performance in most operating conditions. Besides improving fuel efficiency, this also allows for increased controllability for more precise performance. The integrated work mode system offers the operator a choice of five work modes, according to the task in hand.

With its 6.2m boom and 3.05m intermediate length dipper arm, the EC300E has an impressive forward reach of 10.7m and a dig depth of 7.3m, coupled to an equally impressive lifting capacity of 3.8 tonnes at full reach across carriage. At the business end of the machine, a 2.0m³ direct mount rock bucket was specified for working in hard digging conditions.

From small beginnings more than 50 years ago, I & H Brown has grown into a diverse and successful family business with wide-ranging interests that include; civil engineering, construction and remediation, energy, property development, plant hire and farming and estate management. Employing around 200 personnel at its headquarters located in Perth, I & H Brown undertakes a whole range projects across the length and breadth of Great Britain.
