The world’s finest heavy equipment operators gathered at Caterpillar’s Malaga Demonstration and Learning Centre to compete in one of the industry’s most prestigious events, the Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge (GOC). This regional semi-final brought together 20 elite operators from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, all vying for a coveted place in the 2026 global finals in Las Vegas.

Each competitor had already conquered local dealer events to reach this stage, showcasing an extraordinary combination of technical skill, precision, and nerves of steel. Only three would advance to the finals, set to take place during CONEXPO-CON/AGG, inside Caterpillar’s massive 70,000-square-foot outdoor exhibit in the Festival Lot.

Champions of the Challenge

Emerging victorious from the Malaga semifinals was Belgium’s own Gunter Dewit, representing dealer Bergerat Monnoyeur Belgium. With an impressive total of 983 points, the lowest combined score of time and penalties, Dewit demonstrated not just speed but remarkable consistency across all events.

Close behind, Denmark’s Nicolai Thomsen, representing Zeppelin Denmark, secured first runner-up with 1,048 points. Germany’s Sebastian Behr, from Zeppelin GmbH, claimed second runner-up with 1,101 points. Both Thomsen and Behr will join Dewit in representing the EAME region at the grand finale in Las Vegas.

Putting Skills to the Ultimate Test

The Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge isn’t just a competition, it’s a celebration of engineering prowess and operator excellence. Every participant faced the same four demanding challenges, each designed to test precision, control, and mastery of Cat® technology.

Serena Janssen, Industry Solutions Lead at Caterpillar, summed up the spirit of the event: “Our team worked tirelessly to make sure operators could show off their skills in every area. We created challenges where every operator had the same shot at winning. Competition was fierce and everyone gave it their best shot to be crowned the winner of this prestigious event.”

The Four Signature Challenges

Touchdown Challenge

Precision was the name of the game in the Touchdown Challenge. Competitors operated a Cat 320 hydraulic excavator equipped with 3D GPS technology to lift and place rugby balls into baskets, before manoeuvring to touch two targets with pinpoint accuracy.

This event highlighted not only mechanical control but also how digital guidance can transform operator efficiency.

Centennial Push Challenge

In honour of a century of Caterpillar innovation, the Centennial Push Challenge tasked operators with guiding a Cat D4 dozer through a complex course within strict time limits.

Assisted by built-in Steer Assist and Slope Assist systems, competitors had to balance raw power with finesse, showcasing how technology enhances precision and productivity in earthmoving.

Loader Labyrinth Challenge

Perhaps the most technically demanding of all, the Loader Labyrinth Challenge required operators to demonstrate adaptability using a Cat 938 small wheel loader. The course combined loading, hauling, dumping, and fine handling.

After transporting materials to a Cat off-highway truck, operators switched from bucket to forks to carry and place a pipe along a set path, before reversing the process in perfect sequence. The challenge was a true showcase of versatility and multitasking under pressure.

Articulator Challenge

Rounding off the competition, the Articulator Challenge featured Caterpillar’s next-generation 730 articulated truck. Competitors navigated through a tight obstacle course before reversing into a designated dumping area.

To complete the run, they had to safely lower the truck body, return it to travel position, and park precisely under a wheeled loader, all while keeping calm under the clock.

Event Winners

Each event crowned its own champion:

  • Touchdown Challenge: Dino Toic (Teknoxgroup Croatia)
  • Centennial Push Challenge: Silvian-Alexandru Milea (Bergerat Monnoyeur Romania)
  • Loader Labyrinth Challenge: Gunter Dewit (Bergerat Monnoyeur Belgium)
  • Articulator Challenge: Gunter Dewit (Bergerat Monnoyeur Belgium)

Dewit’s double win in both the Loader Labyrinth and Articulator events cemented his place as the overall champion, demonstrating exceptional balance between speed, safety, and machine mastery.

From Local Tracks to Global Glory

The Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge isn’t just about competition, it’s about building a global community of operators who inspire excellence across the construction and earthmoving industries. Regional events across the world determine the nine finalists who will converge in Las Vegas for the grand showdown.

The ultimate champion will walk away with a $10,000 cash prize or an all-expenses-paid trip for two to a Caterpillar location anywhere in the world. Yet for most competitors, the real prize lies in recognition, being celebrated as one of the best machine operators on the planet.

A Celebration of Skill and Technology

Beyond the spectacle of competition, the GOC serves a deeper purpose: to demonstrate how modern technology is reshaping the art of equipment operation. From GPS-enabled excavators to automated assist features in dozers and loaders, the integration of digital systems is giving operators greater control, accuracy, and efficiency than ever before.

Events like the GOC show how the future of construction is being written by those behind the controls. With smart equipment, enhanced connectivity, and real-time performance data, operators are becoming as much digital pilots as machine drivers, blending traditional skill with advanced technology.

Building the Future Together

As the dust settles in Malaga, anticipation builds for the 2026 finals in Las Vegas. The world will once again watch as Caterpillar’s top nine operators go head-to-head, pushing boundaries and redefining what’s possible in heavy machinery performance.

In a world increasingly shaped by automation and AI, Caterpillar’s Global Operator Challenge reminds us that human skill remains at the heart of progress. The men and women who master these machines are not just operators, they’re engineers of precision, ambassadors of innovation, and custodians of a century-old legacy of earthmoving excellence.
