Boschung fixed automated ice spray technology upgraded on the A4 in France

In 2002, the first BOSCHUNG fixed automated spray technology (FAST) system was installed on some sections of the A4 in France which were endangered by black ice.

After more than 15 years of uninterrupted service, it was now time to replace this system by a new one. The deadlines for the implementation of the project by the motorway operator SANEF were very demanding.

The Boschung solution

As the use of the fixed automated spray technology system on the A4 – and the entire motorway network managed by SANEF in France – has proved its worth, the main objective was to install a new fixed automated spray technology system using the latest generation of FAST technology in time for the dangerous season.

Fixed Automated Spray Technology Systems (FAST) is a proven technology for increasing road safety in critical areas by reducing ice-related accidents. Automatically controlled by Ice Early Warning Systems (GFS), the system sprays the road surface using spray nozzles at the side of the road, spray discs in the road surface or by means of the innovative Micro-FAST technology, with a chemical solution before ice can form. This also prevents the accretion of snow in a compact layer on the road surface.

The new system offers greater coverage of the respective road surface through improved spray patterns and more efficient spray heads.

The results

BOSCHUNG used their efficient project management to meet the very ambitious deadlines set by the SANEF.

On the A4 from Paris in the direction of Strasbourg, two new fixed automated spray technology systems were installed on schedule at motorway kilometres 107 and 123. It is planned to replace the old systems at motorway kilometres 257, 264 and 406 in 2019.

Pascal Hemery Technology and Systems Department, Reims Head of projects, said: “This first phase of renovation was indeed carried out within the desired time frame, but I would particularly like to highlight the way in which this work was carried out. Indeed, this project was carried out in a professional manner by the company BOSCHUNG, with a permanent concern, linked to strict compliance with safety instructions.”
